After 55-75 years, only 2% of works have any commercial value. After 75 years, it declines further. No wonder that so much of our cultural heritage is now #OrphanWorks, with no known proprietor. Extending copyright on all works - not just those whose proprietors sought out extensions - incinerated whole libraries full of works, permanently.

@Adzebill one of the issues, I’m sure you know, is that the copyright term rights are usually with the publisher. Having tried many times, I’ve found it is often impossible even to find someone to ask in the tortuous chain of merged and taken over publishing houses that might have succeeded to the rights. Digitisation of disappearing works makes an orphan works regime all the more important #libraries #archives #copyright #OrphanWorks
