The versions out there, that are commercially available, with the correct choice of cash-crops, can hit break-even within 3 harvests.

The homebrew versions can hit break-even with one harvest. :D

I don't believe Adafruit is perfect either, but some of the cases Phil describes in that post are pretty bad. It's interesting that each of the different companies may be locking things up for slightly different reasons.
