#OStatus seems (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OStatus) to indeed rely on those technologies I mentioned and looks complementary with them.

I really wish #Mastodon had not removed support for #ostatus back in 2019. There may have been a technical reason for this but I wish the devs between #gnusocial and mastodon had reached out to each other to work on this. I'll bet had they worked together, something else wonderful could've been built.

In the blogpost ⬆️ I mention the history of #StatusNet (the software), #OStatus (the protocol), and identi.ca (the biggest instance). Identi.ca used to be about 1/10th of all of "OStatus-verse". Then it got redeployed using incompatible software and tore the heart out of that decentralized social network.

I feel this history is very relevant today, as mastodon.social is about 1/10th (by monthly active accounts). And continues to grow.

Eugen can be the #BDFL of Mastodon if he wants to.

But the article really doesn't explain that the #Fediverse is bigger than Mastodon, that Mastodon is only one client among dozens. If there is to be any BDFL over the #Fediverse it would be @evan and I don't think he wants the job.

The #Fediverse started in 2008 with Evan's Laconi.ca and #OStatus. Mastodon has been around for less than half the lifespan of the #Fediverse.

Imagine if the browser wars of the late 90s resulted in Netscape and Microsoft each having their own version of HTML protocols. So each new website would have to decide which universe they wanted to be in before designing their site, and could only link to other sites in the Netscape Internet or the Explorer internet. That's where we are today with social media. It's a hellscape.

I do include, as do many others including some of the Fediverse database directories, #OStatus, #ZOT, #Diaspora, #ActivityPub, #Matrix, and now even #nostr - thanks in large part due to the seamless interoperability #Mostr and a couple of other efforts are providing 🙂

@SebasFC In the total of #Fediverse users, I only inlcuded those services that support #ActivityPub, which is the majority. I did not include those services that only support other protocols, such as #ostatus, #diaspora, #matrix. These services cannot federate with those that support ActivityPub.

Is the #ostatus spec still online somewhere? All the links I find 404. But it's in use, e.g. Mastodon uses ostatus atomUri, inReplyToAtomUri, conversation, perhaps more.

I have two questions remaining:
1.) What does the link ""https://mas.to/authorize_interaction?uri={uri}"" actually describe? Is there a description somewhere?

I'm not very good at this search engine game, so I found nothing useful when looking at #ostatus .

2.) If I implement my own webfinger service, I plan to, is there a way to include the link from 1. to explain #n00bdevs what the meaning of this link is?

This issue with replies not showing on Mastodon is a huge problem, that needs to be fixed.

I can't remember that we had this issue with Identi.ca/Laconi.ca and the different protocols it used, but I don't know if that's because the issue didn't exist, or because most people used the main instance.

Does other federated tools of today have this same problem, like Pixelfed or PeerTube?

@ShallowWater Yes. And yes. In fact, #Friendica is even better federated than #Mastodon because Friendica also supports #Diaspora and #OStatus (which Mastodon dropped, cutting Mastodon users out of a significant portion of the #Fediverse at the time).
