I've #hacked together a greedy AI that plays the move that maximizes its winning margin on the next turn. It's not too hard to win against, but it's a start.
Now to make the AI's move-playing look less awkward.

But think: What if Othello was a dramatic sports anime with a lot of plot twists, villains and battles? BECAUSE THAT'S WHAT MY DREAMS WERE LIKE. I woke up in the morning thinking "damn, that one was WEIRD." The bishoujo guy who might be a friend, might be an enemy, was really committed to the Tiger opening.

I have been writing Othello games since high school, in BASIC. I wrote one in FORTRAN in college. I wrote one in C for the Sony Magic Link. I wrote one in Python a few years back, and now I have written one in JavaScript. I have a long TO DO list to finish this, but it has some fundamental structural issues preventing me from taking it where I need it to go. So... time to take a step back and port it to a game engine (this is straight JS and HTML at the moment). #Reversi #Othello #JavaScript

I've created an #Othello #AI that can easily kick my butt. This is probably the AI I'm using in my #PICO8 entry in #AGBIC 2023.
It uses the standard #minimax #algorithm (actually #negamax) with alpha-beta pruning. No transposition tables yet (mainly because I don't yet know how they work).
It takes only a few seconds to make a move (though I made a few cutbacks to get it that fast), which will hopefully mean it's fast enough on PICO-8.

Working on a very basic #Othello / #Reversi #prototype in #Python, so I can figure out how to add #AI to it.
An AI player has to do two things: decide what its next move is, and evaluate how well it's doing right now. So I've split the work into a Decider and an Evaluator.
I've coded a random decider and a greedy decider, and I've been having fun testing them out. Next, I'll code different evaluation functions, and a minimax decider!

I'm thinking about #programming a #game called "Apathello" for @agbic . It's basically the #boardgame #Othello/#Reversi, but against a sentient void who gives you comforting messages throughout.
I'll be coding it in #PICO8, which will make this my first PICO-8 game project since "Ataxxmas" in 2020 (another board game!).
Hopefully I'll be able to make a competent #AI for it. There are plenty of resources about it online I can learn from. I can't wait to get started!
