Today we went to #Otranto in #Puglia, where we explored the 1000 year old floor design by Panteleone. In my book on Puglia he is called the “monk revolutionary” because he was able to capture all the knowledge of the ancient world in one divine embrace on the tree of life. It is AMAZING.#bookstodon

Wir haben heute einen tollen Strand nördlich von #Otranto entdeckt. Wasser wie in einer Badewanne und feinster Sand.
Leider ist der obligatorische Besuch beim Leuchtturm südlich von Otranto kürzer geworden - wegen Renovierung konnte man nicht hin. Dafür war die Rückfahrt mit offenem Cabrio extrem cool.

On a whim caused by my listening to a podcast about Polidori and his vampire story, I decided to expand my knowledge of gothic literature by obtaining myself a copy of "The Castle of #Otranto" by Horace #Walpole (does the length of this sentence display my reading of it?).

Is it #literature ? I doubt it. At least, I don't think it is. The main villain of the piece is hysterical (okay, he's a nobleman who has just lost his only son, but does that really excuse the kind of behaviour he's displaying here?), the most sensible character in the story after reading about 50% of it is his daughter (who is so far an audience member rather than a participant, and the fact that she remains so is why I call her sensible), and the priest who has just been called on in his professional aspect has discovered (along with us) that the young man who is about to be executed is his long lost son, and that they're both noblemen.

For a #gothic story with long, rambling sentences, the action is coming thick and fast.
