I do find it interesting that the city is choosing to use an image where the person biking isn't wearing a helmet. Last winter, my partner and I took OC Transpo to visit his parents in Orleans. This is the bus stop (in summer): A paved slab w no sidewalk. In winter the slab isn't cleared so we were dropped at the side of a busy, high speed road w 3' of snow.

Instagram served me another one. And I bet that the marketing department is like, ops we fucked in on one but now everyone is talking about it so win!!

Except that none of the imagery, none of the message, none of what’s “left” from this makes anyone look hunk twice about changing their behaviours when driving a car. Because the system and environment and big screens all still exist. And an instagram ad does fuck all #ottawa

The thing is I’m not opposed to using graphic imagery when there is an appropriate framework and message. Australia and some European countries have used very graphic video in car crash / driving with a phone campaigns. And Mr general manager probably saw one and thought of this will work to convince people that “following the rules will keep them safe.”

Except there is no framework to support the image and the message here. It doesn’t work. Hence the massive outcry #ottawa

What fucking planet do you live on that you think social media ads on Instagram are going to change behaviours when in environments such as a street? Rightly or wrongly people will make decisions based on perceived risk and safety. Telling people to "obey the fucking rules" is mindnumbingly stupid in a situation where physical danger is real, the power imbalance is totally skewed and people in +4,000 lb vehicles routinely break the fucking rules #ottawa #ottbike
