I'm currently visiting the Outback town of Broken Hill. I'm doing some family history research and have thus visited the Cemetery (40 hectares (100 acres), ~45,000 internments). It appears that crushed glass (beer bottles?) is a popular ornamentation - I don't recall seeing that elsewhere.

I found this example of what I think is a river red gum growing beside the highway at Enngonia in outback NSW. Such a healthy tree with lots of new growth and flower buds forming.

This is a photo of a Yulkuparlu or River Red Gum growing beside Coopers Creek at Innamincka. More of a cluster of trees rather than a single trunk. The are very healthy at the moment, teeming with birdlife. Unfortunately the road into Coongie Lakes was still closed when we were there.

I was trying to find out the indigenous name for Coopers Creek. But it seems that there is not one single name because it is such a large area with many different channels, branches and permanent waterholes. I found some references that say the Yandrwandha people called it Yini minga meaning your waterhole from which we get the name of the town Innamincka.
I have found other references that name it Tingatingana.

I found this useful reference for the area.

The sign says 'WARNING. POISONOUS SNAKES, SALT AND FRESHWATER CROCODILES INHABIT THE WATERS AROUND THIS CAMPSITE. NO SWIMMING. NO WADING. NO FISHING.' And you better believe it! However, this tropical North QLD lagoon did have the most incredible diversity of water birds I have ever seen.

This old wagon has either been in a gun fight or has been used for target practice. Makes a fine garden ornament either way. Spotted up in the Gulf country in North QLD.

One issue with the new used car. Tire pressure light came on. Then went off. Then came back on driving back from a gig last night.

Perhaps the batteries are dying? It’s a Subaru 2008 Outback. Seems to be a thing.

Freak weather soaks Australian , dumping months of rain in two days

Downpours from massive cloud band may approach 100mm in some regions, triggering flood watches

"Yulara airport, near Uluru, collected 64.6mm of rain over the 48 hours to 9am on Tuesday – the wettest pair of June days since 2004 and almost quadruple the June average.

"Other locations including the Kimberley’s Gibb River were unseasonably wet. It received 72mm of rain during the same period, making it the second wettest winter day in records going back 101 years, according to Weatherzone. That tally was seven times the June norm."

Been a big day here. Time to call it. Here's a wild flower from the Top End of Australia to brighten your day (or night). Nighty night folks :)

Recently adopted a macro lens for my LUMIX S5 and honestly it's been an absolute joy exploring the world through a new perspective.

I'm not into focus stacking or maximizing depth of field though, quite the opposite. It's the shallow focus that I love so much, and working a composition from subjects at a small scale.

Having driven 1,200 km (750 miles) from home I'm now in the Outback town of Broken Hill (population nearly 20,000). I’m on my way into South Australia for some bushwalking in the North Flinders Ranges.

The photograph shows part of the enormous mullock heaps that illustrate the long-time mining history of the town.

If you've ever heard of BHP, a mining/fossil fuel company, it was formed near here as the Broken Hill Proprietary Company about 140 years ago.
