REM might have been the era’s defining band, had a scruffy trio called Nirvana not arrived later the same year. “Losing My Religion” captured the zeitgeist as an existential elegy to self-assurance. “Shiny Happy People” feigned exuberance with irony missed by those who found the tune annoying. “Near Wild Heaven” and “Texarkana” were classic REM jangle pop. Some “with it” moments, like the rap on “Radio Song,” have aged poorly.
