A recruitment agency told me I will now have to accept a very low salary and start in a junior position, assuming anyone is interested in taking me on at all.
My 26 years of experience do not count for much.

If employers are going to take this approach, they should continue to pay over-50s a full wage, including pension allowace, right up to retirement age, to do as they please.
The only time this arrangement should cease is if the person secures an alternative job.
They might then take an alternative view, but I doubt it.
