Any of my geo friends start playing with the #overture map data yet?
Wonder if there are any "places" with more than just a "name".
I am trying to find geo referenced objects that contain paragraphs (or more) of text data. I guess it could also be image data.
The hard part seems to be to either:
1. Find big text/image data that already has coords attached
2. Find geo data that has more than numbers and short strings for data
Michael Barry has created a vector map to display the datasets released by the Overture Maps Foundation.
This is the first time I've seen the ways in the dataset - great to see cycleways are in there! Also interesting to see how Microsoft and OSM buildings are interleaved - OSM buildings have the priority where I've checked.

Some more examples. Here's Bath Abbey:
https://bdon.github.io/overture-tiles/places.html#19.17/51.3812787/-2.3593204
We have:
- Abbey, Bath
- Bath Abbey
- Bath Cathedral
- 바스 수도원
- 巴斯修道院
- Bath, England Bath City Church
All but one of which are >80% accuracy.
Pretty sure Stonehenge isn't there either.
I've used the Overture Maps tles app to explore my local shopping street.
The overture data contains:
- a pizza place that closed about 3 years ago
- a bank that closed 3 years ago
- another bank that closed at least 2 years ago
- a supermarket that closed about 18 months ago
- some very poor geocoding, including several very misplaced points
- several duplicates
So pretty unimpressed so far.
@akadouri @amapanda Oh that's right I *did* use overpass for the @sucho work, completely forgot! Worked well! One thing I'd be interested to do if I can find the bandwidth is getting some pbf -> geoarrow exports especially for points. (https://github.com/geoarrow/geoarrow)--one thing I really like about the #overture export is that the parquet format they provide, though a little wonky, is still a dream to work with in a non-geospatial stack. (Don't even have to deserialize WKB; can just use bbox lat+long).
Maybe the whole point of the #Overture release was to get the community to assess it for free in various areas of the world?
Ran through the new overture data using https://bdon.github.io/overture-tiles. I assume with an alpha release it's going to be rough. Hopefully this gets cleaned up.
Some data very up to date - most is wrong from either a date perspective or spatial location. Makes me think it's phone collected data. I'm curious where it came from. Overall I chalk it up to "it's alpha". #osm #overture

Of course this was only an informal evaluation of #OvertureMaps #Overture POI data:
Area: Wiedner Hauptstraße 1-78, Vienna, Austria
Ground truth: #OpenStreetMap, StreetView, local knowledge (I walk there daily)
Absolute numbers:
43 correct POIs
17 unverifiable
12 5-10m off
6 >10m off
7 obsolete
25 bogus
61 missing
Caveats: done informally, so may be off by a few % (it is my weekend after all) & I hope the map by @bdon shows all POIs in highest zoom?
#overturemaps #overture #OpenStreetMap
I just did a quick evaluation of #Overture #OvertureMaps POI data in a local shopping street (based on map by @bdon):
39% of POIs were correctly placed
15% unverifiable (offices etc.)
11% 5-10 meters off
5% >10 meters off
6% obsolete (shops long gone etc.)
23% completely bogus (nothing of that name in the area, gibberish etc.)
Another 55% of the total mapped POIs were missing (clearly visible open shops not in the dataset)
At this point, this data looks completely useless to me.
The more I look at Overture the more it looks like "We like OSM but there are too many nerds and not enough product managers and corporate control, so let's invent something new for no good reason"

I know I'm late to this, but I'm really excited to see how #Overture Maps pan out. Seeing a quality, open mapping service develop that could actually challenge Google Maps is super exciting, especially with The Linux Foundation being involved.
