Overture Places are quite disappointing at the moment based on a quick scan of my local area. #OvertureMaps in Mexico is mostly a vacant lot. Which shouldn't be a surprise for anyone... :blobcatsadpats:

Of course this was only an informal evaluation of #OvertureMaps #Overture POI data:
Area: Wiedner Hauptstraße 1-78, Vienna, Austria
Ground truth: #OpenStreetMap, StreetView, local knowledge (I walk there daily)

Absolute numbers:
43 correct POIs
17 unverifiable
12 5-10m off
6 >10m off
7 obsolete
25 bogus
61 missing

Caveats: done informally, so may be off by a few % (it is my weekend after all) & I hope the map by @bdon shows all POIs in highest zoom?

I just did a quick evaluation of #Overture #OvertureMaps POI data in a local shopping street (based on map by @bdon):

39% of POIs were correctly placed
15% unverifiable (offices etc.)
11% 5-10 meters off
5% >10 meters off
6% obsolete (shops long gone etc.)
23% completely bogus (nothing of that name in the area, gibberish etc.)

Another 55% of the total mapped POIs were missing (clearly visible open shops not in the dataset)

At this point, this data looks completely useless to me.

Thanks to the map that @bdon has put out, I checked the POIs in my neighborhood and overall I am not very impressed with #OvertureMaps' Places layer. My estimate is that maybe 50% of POIs are not accurate: either it is already closed permanently, placed in the wrong location (I've seen one that should be like 15 kilometers away), or are not valid POIs (e.g., "Somewhere Only We Know", "Sa Bahay Ng Maganda :)", "Langit!").

Given that #OvertureMaps has now released their first alpha version of their data, I'm now waiting for someone to create an online tool to either display them on a slippy map or additionally compare them with #OpenStreetMap data. 🤞

(I actually am interested in building such a tool for my country but alas I don't have the luxury of time or resources.)

Why didn't they just put some money into Open Street Maps? Answer, because they can't control it or the location data from it. There is a real danger that this open mapping system backed by the power of big tech will drive OSM into the mire of obscurity now. #OpenStreetMap #OvertureMaps #BigTech

TIL that Meta/FB actually has a simplified single-table database schema based on their #OpenStreetMap-derived #DaylightMap distribution called Earth Table. It has several themes like "building", "road", and "water" further divided into classes and subclasses. They first announced this at the #NACIS2022 conference and I actually think this is closer to what #OvertureMaps is going to be rather than Daylight Map itself.

I have been using #GoogleMaps recently and I am constantly frustrated by its limitations. There is no ambition there anymore. They achieved dominance and have been slacking off since. I do hope this tendency will lead to the fall of Google.

I am cautiously optimistic about the #OvertureMaps/#OpenStreetMaps collaboration.
