A weekend filled with #mastodon #owninstance adventures. Problem is mainly me, Plesk second and no knowledge about nginx. Need to learn more about #nginx to get it running.

Super excited that as of last night, the server and everything that goes with it, is now in the works of being setup for me to run my own Mastodon instance.

Hopefully it won't be too much longer and I'll have AllThingsTech.social available to get the finishing touches done and hopefully soon open it to the public to add some users.

I'm excited, but also super nervous. Still quite a bit of work to be done.

#mastodon implements full-text search with ElasticSearch which requires a lot of RAM. I run a local instance for a single user, so I wanted to be able to search from the database instead.

I now have a working implementation for that feature.
It still needs testing, but if any #OwnInstance #admin is interested, I can share the code (it's not on GitHub as I don't use it, but I can put a patch on the Web with instructions on how to apply it).

Anyone any ideas why my #mastodon #docker spins up perfectly and works well initially and then #postgresql container crashes and won’t restart? but equally no error in the logs!! Happened twice now! Very frustrating!! #selfhostingmastodon #owninstance #help

I seized the opportunity to open my own Mastodon instance. I would like to gain technical experience first and foremost. Since the instance remains private and the hosting is taken over by masto.host, the time effort is probably kept within limits. Let's see!

In any case, I'm glad that I could take over many followers. So my news stream remains interesting for sure! :-)

Ok, so far I failed with hosting my own instance. I went through all steps in docs, but I can't connect to instance no matter what I do.
I'm getting 20 times redirects to self and that's all.
Furthermore, I have no idea what can be the issue. I tried 3 times so far and each time with the same result.

It's enough for today, I'll try again tomorrow.
But it's okay, it's my first time with such topic so 🤷‍♂️

After a few days of thinking about running my own instance I came to the conclusion: "screw it, at worse I'll stay here where I currently am" (which is still great thou!)
So I bought a cheap VPS, and I'm starting to play with it.

Would it make sense to start an instance aimed at science journalists? Maybe hosted/paid for by the European Federation for Science Journalism? (#efsj).

I have the feeling many science journalists now not really know where to go.

What do other #ScienceJournalists think?

I can imagine the blue bird is still an important place to go for journalists, but building is often easier with less people on it ;-)

Hello, and welcome to my new account on my #ownInstance. Apologies if you get any weird #notifications because of this.

Still trying to wrap my head around the disk usage on my masto.host instance. I've been active on this server since November 2, on a plan that should be able to handle about 20 users with 50GB of media storage.

I'm the only user and I've already used up over close to 25% of the media disk space.
How? Can someone help me and explain?
