Trim Greenhood - Pterostylis concinna - Croajingolong NP, VIC. Another widespread winter-flowering orchid in East Gippsland which seems to be out in smaller numbers this year with limited winter rainfall. Can be found as early as May, then right through to Sept, in different areas. Several large colonies that I've seen flowering in mid-June were not out this year - with just a few scattered roadside plants located so far this winter.

This is 'Big Red', though he/she is actually a South Australian blue gum, #Eucalyptus leucoxylon. Biggest tree on our place and all the more special for being a crimson flowering form of the species. #bloomscrolling #ozplants #RockleighSA

Fringed helmet orchid - Corybas fimbriatus - in Croajingolong NP, VIC. Fairly widespread winter-flowering orchid in east AUS - can be found growing in large colonies in good seasons. Have only seen a few scattered plants out so far this year in drier conditions.

First quick Far East Gippsland winter orchid scout of the year only came up with a single nodding greenhood (Pterostylis nutans) in flower. No plants at all out at several sites which normally feature large colonies of greenhoods/helmets in July.
Local winter rainfall is so far down a fair bit compared to recent good post-fire seasons so could already be an issue heading into a potentially hot/dry spring and summer. Hopefully some better late-winter rainfall will pick things up but not seeing much on the forecast at the moment!

Banksia Spinulosa seen flowering everywhere on a Bushwalk in Bunyip State Forest on weekend.
Hakea clavata (coastal hakea) is an interesting WA species with distinctive thick, fleshy leaves + pink scented flowers in winter. The one grafted plant I have in the garden (Corunna, NSW) is now almost 18 yrs old and still looking great with just a light prune each year. It's currently attracting a lot of winter insects - including the common jezabel (Delias nigrina) - plus adding a very pleasant fragrance to the garden near the house.
Unfortunately not a Hakea often seen in nurseries - I've only ever grafted a single plant (onto H. salicifolia) ... although I have had a 100% success rate so far ... ;)

Eriochilus cucullatus - Eastern Bunny Orchid (Parson's Bands) near Genoa, VIC. I usually call this as an autumn orchid but it can seen flowering in VIC between January and June - depending on location / altitude. Mostly small, single flowers out at this location - apart from these two ;)

Put in a pond about 4 yrs ago, slowly populating it with mainly #ozplants Best find was a punnet of Tunbridge buttercups on special at Bunnings. The birds, frogs, snakes & kids love it. But is this Cottongrass? from the northern hemisphere???
I can't get enough of the garland lily (Calostemma purpureum) blooms popping up from dry ground in the paddocks #wildflowers #ozplants
Corunastylis sp. (midge orchid) near Braidwood, NSW. Larger flowers + longer sepals & labellum than other similar dark-flowering midge orchids nearby (like C. ostrina) but also probably slightly different to C. superba which has the largest flowers of the genus. Didn't see any out flowering this year - so still filed under #mysterymidges for now.
