Leider erwähnt dieses Abstract nicht deutlich genug, dass #Facebook / #Meta an der Ermittlung maßgeblich beteiligt war.

@Ciantic The fact that #threads was released explicitly WITHOUT the ability for EU citizens to sign up says everything you need to know about #meta and their abhorrent user #privacy track record.
That they decided it was easier to exclude nearly half a billion people rather than face the consequences is rather wild.
Yes, according to The Guardian, #regulations in the EU were the main issue: "Sources at #Meta, which owns Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp, said regulations were behind the postponement of an EU launch, amid a series of clashes between the social media group and the bloc." #Threads #P92 #Project92

I'm confused, hoping someone can explain:
One of the "defederate with Threads" arguments being advanced is that "Threads is about harvesting user's data"
Which, ok, sure - Threads is about harvesting *Threads users* data, that part I get.
What part of this setup, though, allows Threads to harvest *other* people's data (ie, the fediverse in general), in a way that can be genuinely blocked by defederating with them?

Of all things about #Threads, what puzzles me the most is why they codenamed it #P92 or project #Barcelona.
I can only think of the Barcelona Olympic competition of 1992. But why would #Meta use that? Do they code name all their projects with Olympic cities?
It can't be random. Anyone knows or has a good guess?

We should all git clone the repository for mastodon and activitypub. That way there’s a backup when #meta fucks up the fediverse, we can just restore to an older version.
@tchambers Yes, just got it.
Android phone (Pixel 6a) in The UK.
I first forcibly updated my Instagram app to the latest version released today, by manually downloading it from APK Mirror. 😀

I am as yet undecided about all this #meta #fedidrama, but one thing is certain —
Meta buys things that they consider a threat to their bottom line.
No, while you cannot "buy" the ActivityPub protocol in its glorious entirety...
You can buy instance admins.
Imagine your instance suddenly tacking on a "powered by Meta" in its tagline.
Everybody has a number. What's yours?

I do wish I had more time to commit to advocating for the block side to my fellow #CoSocialists , but I also empathise* with the wait-and-see approach that has become the consensus on the server. It comes from a good place.
I will, however, be watching Threads / #P92 closely, as I'm sure many others on the other side of this vote will. I don't know what it's downfall will be, but Threads is not long for this world. Let's just hope it isn't part of the Extinguish phase.
*But strongly disagree
The #cosocial board of directors has voted not to block Meta's new project Threads (also known as #p92 ).
While I think that not blocking Threads is unambiguously a bad thing, I am happy with the process by which this decision was come to. CoSocial put out a request for comments from it's audience (under the #CoSocialMeta ) tag, and the decision truly does match the (quite overwhelming) consensus of sentiment under that tag.
Interesting how Brexit has (apparently) enabled the launch of Threads in The UK.

Here's another factor which will boost #Threads' initial user-base - which I hadn't considered...
Some anti-Musk people will sign-up for Threads to never use it; simply to ensure it's a success, so that Twitter finally dies.
It really does seem that many hate Musk (slightly) more than they hate Zuckerberg.
All the comments under this Reddit post are very interesting...

The most important point about #Threads (which nobody else seems to be making) is that a number of advocacy groups, news organisations, and other professional bodies have Instagram accounts, but no presence within the Fediverse.
If Threads brings BBC News, CNN, Sky News, and their reporters to engage with us here, this can only be a good thing.
Even Twitter had its multitude of influencers, trolls, and posers... They're easy to avoid.

Meta sin Twitter-rival, Threads, nærmer seg veldig. Ifølge @mattnavarra ligger den nå ute i App Store med forventet lanseringsdato 6. juli.

Hello Mapstondonians of OSM.town! What do you think about #Fedipact? #Facebook (aka #Meta) will release a website which might have some way to interact & federate with this service (aka #P92 #Barcelona #Project92). Some Fedi instance admins plan to block it (#Fedipact).
What do you, the people who use this server, think? 🤔 What should we do?
