Send me patience today. Husbot is home with the kids to really put a dent in some of the packing, and my kids are... uh.

Unmotivated? They had stuff to get done this week, none of it got done, it's 9am, and already tensions are running high.

I work from home, and I find this kind of tension really uncomfortable. Probably just need to close my door and put up with the heat (office doesn't get good ventilation).

When I leave for a short trip I like to pack the smallest bag I can. Then I end up needing more stuff and carry 3 plastic bags of stuff that didn't fit the bag.

Killing time at DXB before my Melbourne flight.

FlyDubai was OK, brand-new 737 MAX and a friendly crew. It's kind-of a low cost airline for short to medium flights from Dubai and feeds into Emirates flights.

This meant that yesterday in Belgrade the penny dropped that the airline running my first flight was going to be strict for a change about the 7kg limit on cabin baggage (which is all of my luggage).

So I took every single item out of my backpack and laid them on the hotel bed and methodically decided what I could throw out to reduce the weight. Socks and toiletries were part of the cull - I left near-full tubes of toothpaste and sunblock behind with a note saying "Please take! Or throw away."

Got it down to 8kg, so then I transferred some paperwork, my hefty notebooks and my Kindle to the capacious zip-up pockets of my jacket. To think how I've been complaining about lugging that jacket around in the hot weather! Saved the day.

Using handheld scales from my hotel, I then weighed the packed backpack and it was exactly 7.0kg. Perfect. Once it had been weighed at the airport and I'd gone through security, I transferred the kilo of jacket stuff back to the backpack.

Good disciplinary exercise I guess. Did make it easier to carry. :)
