The second Temple of Hera (possibly also of Poseidon) at the Greek colonial city of #Paestum in the Italian region of Campania south of Naples. It dates from c450BCE. The three Greek temples here are among the best preserved in the world. All three are constructed in the Doric order, two being dedicated to Hera and the third to Athena. In this image we can see the pronounced curvature in the columns (known as entasis), a feature of the Hera temples.

Today's Flickr photo with the most hits: this fresco from the Tomb of the Diver, in the archaeological museum of Paestum. We see a young, naked, athletic man, preceded by a girl playing the aulos, and followed by an older man. The other interior faces of the tomb show guests drinking, hints of sexual activity, drinking games. The tomb's lid shows the unique, and eponymous, fresco - a naked young man diving into a pool of water.

I study the #roman #empire from the bottom up, exploring how Roman Imperial hegemony changed everyday practices in cities throughout the Roman Mediterranean. I have done a lot of work in #pompeii, #ostia and #paestum. I look forward to work on understanding Rome in its contemporary Afro-Eurasian context, broadening what #ancienthistory is.
I am also programme chair of #urbanstudies at Leiden University in The Hague.
