This week I've mainly been reading, No.71. Rona Goffen's detailed (& at times dense) Renaissance Rivals: Michelangelo, Leonardo, Raphael, Titian (2002), redraws the #arthistory of the early C16th as a series of rivalries that drove each of the named #painters to new heights of achievement. That the would 'compete' while not implausible, is never really justified, but other than that this is a convincing & readable retelling of #renaissance advances in #painting & #sculpture.

This afternoon, I've been reading a biography of Jacob Kramer, a contemporary of Mark Gertler, CRW Nevinson et al at The Slade in the early C20th, and came across this amazing portrait (self-evidently influenced by Kramer's 'hero' Van Gogh).

Looking through a book on #AndrewWyeth this morning cam across this: Off at Sea, 1972.

Not only does it offer a wonderful invocation of the tranquility of a #Quaker meeting house, it also sums up much of the stillness in Wyeth's work... which I now also realise was profoundly influential on a range of ruralist & realist #painters I knew in the west of England

Looking though a book on John Sloan of the US 'ashcan school of #painters I was struck by the similarity of his treatment of the bourgeois pleasure of night-time window shopping to the slightly earlier paintings of (Dutch painter) Isaac Israels.

I've no reason too believe they knew each others' work, but they both (on different sides of the Atlantic seem to have come to similar solutions in depicting the night time urban culture of city streets in the first decades of C20th
