Day 1483 #Pedal2Work
Wet roads on the way to #Melbourne CBD. Not much traffic about, but there was the case of an elderly person walking straight into the bicycle lane I was riding in. Education and paint is not enough. #PaintIsNotInfrastructure ππ²π

Day 1468 #Pedal2Work
Bit of a late start, but was a quick ride into #Melbourne CBD via the main roads. The ones I have ridden was a mix of #PaintIsNotInfrastructure and segregated biccyles lanes. Was happy to not get rained upon, but the wind was kicking up at times. ππ²π

I was biking in #ThePresidio, and I noticed a super dangerous intersection at Lincoln and Halleck. Lincoln doesn't have a stop sign, so turning right on Halleck effectively acts as a slip lane. Great example of how #PaintIsNotInfrastructure. There are what look like bollards all over this area, but they are so close to the curb as to do nothing. My only theory is that this is here to let the bus turn easily.

I am thinking about some guerilla #urbanism. The sharrows near me are a joke. They aren't even separated by a stupid line. They are essentially just signs telling drivers that bikes can use the lane but drivers act as if the 40cm space taken by the paint is for bikes AND cars but the bikes must remain on the paint. I need to either paint a line 1.5 meters out from the sharrow, which is an image of a bike, or take some gray paint and erase the sharrow entirely. The cops use the sharrow to harass anyone they like to bully for using the sidewalk. If there is a #sharrow , bicyclists must ride on the road unless it is "unsafe" but the law doesn't specify who gets to decide it is safe or unsafe.
My bike and shoulders are both wider than the sharrow. #FuckCars #GuerillaUrbanism #PaintIsNotInfrastructure

And before anyone goes #PaintIsNotInfrastructure on me, look what paint is telling these drivers it's ok to do. Paint may not provide protection, but it does shape behavior.
I stood there filming for 20 minutes, and every single right-turning motorist drifted into the bike lane to access the space that diagonal stripe of paint erroneously suggested was a right turn lane.

Paint is not infrastructure.

But I gotta say that I also had bad dreams the last couple of days because the lousy #bike infrastructure here is just incredibly dangerous. And #PaintIsNotInfrastructure fails the hardest when it would be needed the most: after dark in the rain. π

@traceanalysis Aerial shots of Coffs Harbour look fantastic. Appears flat as well. Looks ideal for riding a biccyle.
Sydney not so much. Last time I was there I saw this "infrastructure" (#PaintIsNotInfrastructure) going up a steep hill: https://goo.gl/maps/Pch7rsUD1B5RzhNy7
Thought it was a bad joke from the council.

Missed opportunities. Making the same mistakes again and again and again... Very disappointing. π
