Definitely asked before, but what are your recommended applications (or homegrown systems/procedures) for palaeographical transcription?
Most of what I've done has been in in-house repositories, FromThePage, etc. I have some projects coming up where I need to be more self-hosted, as it were. I currently use a Mac, and my potential list includes Tropy, GenScriber, and Transcript.
Thoughts? Comments? Recommendations?

What's the ideal length for a practical #paleography video/screencast?
We're thinking of putting together a video library covering different document forms (telegrams, letters, account books), localities/languages, and time periods from the Early Modern to the 20th century.
What would help you (or would have helped you) in your own research? #histodons #genealogy #palaeography

Here's a little historical mystery that may be solvable by someone with #palaeography expertise—is this inscription in Trinity College's copy of #Shakespeare's First Folio written in some form of early modern shorthand? And if so, what does it say?

If you are working on modern manuscripts and archives, my course on 'modern' palaeography, 'Transcribing and Editing Manuscripts (after 1700)', which I'm teaching at the London International Palaeography School (LIPS) this July, might be of interest.
Check out some of the other amazing courses as well.

@histodons OK, clearly there is interest in trying to rebuild something like RetroReveal. What I need from you all is some idea in how you used it with manuscripts (where were not the primary use.)
Especially re: color spaces. You know how RR had those different filters, like RGBW, YQ1Q2, YUV_Y, LSHLab, etc.? Which did you use with MSS, and did you ever customize a color space? Post here or email marksaltveit at gmail. Thanks!

Specifically, the software is ImageJ, created for the US National Institutes of Health, and the Color Transformer plugin by Maria E. Barilla. She has since upgraded that to Color Transormer 2, presumably a better choice.
RetroReveal was mostly used by stamp collectors to work with cancellation stamps; there might be ways to do this better suited to medieval scribes' ink and parchment. #histodons #palaeography #codicology

Say, #histodons, is anyone familiar with RetroReveal (RIP), and in particular has anyone tried to recreate it from the underlying open source software?
I'm looking at doing that, but I don't need to reinvent any wheels and am happy to compare notes. @histodons #RetroReveal #palaeography #codicology
If you don't know this tool, it uses image processing techniques to produce pseudo-multispectral images from existing photos. Very useful for reading faded or damaged manuscripts.

#Today I'm eavesdropping on a workplace conversation about a nearby #SpecialCollections #library which is "boring" because it's not a #museum and it doesn't even have an app to decipher 18th and 19th century handwriting so the #archives are "impossible to use".
Interesting how expectations around #accessibility are different across different generations. The group of colleagues is mostly #GenZ and, despite doing #heritage related #MastersDegrees, suffer from the lack of #palaeography courses.

Palaeography and popular culture:
I was just watching episode 4 of Shipwreck Hunters Australia on Disney+, in which they are diving the wreck site of The Trial, an East India Company ship which sank off the coast of Australia in 1622.
Towards the end they showed a couple of manuscripts with the accounts of the survivors, and I will admit to pausing the episode to read part of one out loud to my wife.

My eldest got me this lovely #postcard for #Christmas. I’ve now tracked down the recipient in the 1911 #recensements for Marseille. But struggling to transcribe her employer (row 4) or that of her father (row 1). Can anyone help? I’m good on fifteenth-century French hands but not nineteenth-century ones! #French #Transcription #Palaeography.
