I think the remarkable thing that #archaeology has given me, is that fleeting moments we take for granted in the moment can become so profound and awe inspiring, that reality takes on a whole new perception. A footprint, a cave painting, a bone or strands of preserved hair, man made tools or an unambiguous cooking pot can be found thousands of years apart. Telling their own story of life as it was. Sharing an intimate moment of another life and time long gone. #Palaeontology just blows my mind!
Time for another piece in my human evolution series "Indecent Descent", and apart from the chart itself, this is the most characters I ever fitted into a single "I.D." picture. Time to dive into human evolution again, this time landing about 1.8 million years ago.

A look at what is probably a precursor of the flying pterosaurs.
""It was relatively small compared to the giants that would follow it later in Earth’s history. With a hip height of approximately 0.3 meters (about a foot) and a length of perhaps a meter (roughly three feet), this ancient reptile existed long before the evolution of the pterosaurs most of us recognize."

Paleopolis is a park right in the middle of France whose goal is to teach about #palaeontology. The area is rife with #fossil formations (Commentry for ex, where #Meganeura was found) and the city is known for its rhino Diaceratherium lemanense.
Way better than expected!

A cool interaction: a fossil of a smaller mammal with its teeth in a larger dinosaur.
"A new fossil described this week captures two intertwined animals caught in a life-or-death struggle right before both were entombed in a volcanic event."

Recently a new, more accurate reconstruction was made of the face of Homo floresiensis by forensic experts. And you know what? For a "cute anime girl" fantasy interpretation, I'm actually proud of how much I got right.

"Scientists have identified one of Australia’s first long-distance walkers: a 250kg marsupial with “heeled hands” that roamed across the continent’s arid interior 3.5 million years ago.
Using 3D scanning, Flinders University palaeontologists have described a new group of ancient marsupial, calling it Ambulator – meaning walker or wanderer – for its specific leg and feet adaptations that equipped it to efficiently roam long distances." #Australia #marsupials #ambulator #fossils #paleontology #science #biology #palaeontology #animals #nature

If you're in the UK, The Rise and Reign of the Mammals has just been published in paperback!
Epic in scope and majestic in execution, it thoroughly convinces that the evolutionary history of mammals is just as fascinating as that of the dinosaurs.

Mary Mantell discovered fossil firsts in Sussex in the same time period that Anning, Philpott, and Bennett were also active.

It's amazing palaeontologist Mary Anning's birthday today. She was born in 1799 in Dorset and made many important discoveries. Celebrate her! But also refute all the ignorant claims that Anning was the one and only woman of her time interested in palaeontology. She wasn't even the only woman in Lyme Regis collecting fossils! What about Anning's friend Elizabeth Philpot? What about Etheldred Bennett in Wiltshire, the neighbouring county, who was actively engaged in palaeontology from at least 1809? Why is history of science produced by supposedly respectable institutions, who claim they're promoting women in STEM, still disappearing or denigrating women's achievements? Infuriating.
