"Look again at that dot. That's here. That's home. That's us. On it everyone you love, everyone you know, everyone you ever heard of, every human being who ever was, lived out their lives..."
- Carl Sagan
"It has been said that astronomy is a humbling and character-building experience. There is perhaps no better demonstration of the folly of human conceits than this distant image of our tiny world. To me, it underscores our responsibility to deal more kindly with one another, and to preserve and cherish the pale blue dot, the only home we've ever known."
~ Carl Sagan

The Pale Blue Dot is a photograph of Earth taken Feb. 14, 1990, by NASA’s Voyager 1 at a distance of 3.7 billion miles (6 billion kilometers). The image inspired the title of scientist Carl Sagan's book, "Pale Blue Dot: A Vision of the Human Future in Space," in which he wrote: "𝘓𝘰𝘰𝘬 𝘢𝘨𝘢𝘪𝘯 𝘢𝘵 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘥𝘰𝘵. 𝘛𝘩𝘢𝘵'𝘴 𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘦. 𝘛𝘩𝘢𝘵'𝘴 𝘩𝘰𝘮𝘦. 𝘛𝘩𝘢𝘵'𝘴 𝘶𝘴."

Today, 33 years ago, #Voyager1 took a photo of Earth from a distance of 3.7 Billion miles (40.5 AU). This photo in its totality encompasses the entirety of known biology, ecology, ethology and evolution that we know of, all of it, encapsulated in a #palebluedot
Here is Carl Sagan unveiling the Pale Blue Dot image and eloquently describing what that image meant for humanity.

The "Pale Blue Dot" image was part of the "Family Portrait" set of images taken by Voyager on Feb 14, 1990.
In this mosaic of 60 frames, 6 planets are visible - Jupiter, Earth, Venus, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune.

The "Pale Blue Dot" image was taken by Voyager 1 on Feb 14, 1990, 6b km away, minutes before its cameras were shut off forever.
The updated image below from 2020 was processed by JPL engineer @kevinmgill with input from 2 of the image's original planners.

#OTD (Valentine’s Day) in 1990, Voyager 1 turned around and took a picture of Earth from billions of miles away (beyond Pluto) amidst the glare of the Sun scattering off camera surfaces, the Earth’s reflected light falling on 1/10th of one pixel. Did you know that the spacecraft also captured Venus? (2nd image: #PaleBlueDot is in the brightest beam of the left inset; Venus is between beams in the right inset; Sun is on the far right). #Home #EveryoneYouLove #Valentine #LivingWorld
