That new is little and podgy, so deserves to be drawn. Here it is snacking on some Ginkgo apodes, surrounded by a collection of ferns, bennettitaleans and the Early flower Leefructus.

I doodled the new little feathery -birdy-type-thing everyone's been talking about ( prodigiosus). This one's just curious about a little snail sitting on a fallen Yimaia twig.

Excited for tomorrow's workshop with UC Berkeley's Jepson Herbarium!

Deep Time: Paleobotany and plant evolution

August 26, 2023
Cindy Looy

This course will serve as an introduction to the evolution of and terrestrial . We will follow the evolution of major plant groups from the invasion of land to the end of the Paleozoic (252 million years ago). One ecosystem we are going to focus on is the iconic Carboniferous swamps. These communities covered vast areas of what is now the US and represent the last forest biome dominated by spore plants instead of seed plants. You will get acquainted with the groups that inhabited these wetlands and the unusual conditions that facilitated their prominence, and you will learn how we reconstruct these inhabitants and their communities in incredible detail. In addition, we will interpret how major environmental changes unfolded across landscapes in the past and how plants have shaped the outside of our planet.

This is part of some prep work for a piece I've been planning for a while. I may not be restoring every leaf in the final piece (as there's already over 120, and I still have probably another 50 more taxa to add), but hopefully it'll look nice (and be useful) when it's finished.

Trying to understand the (not so easy) life of a small tree that grew 240 million years ago...Look at these inner vs. outer rings! 🌲⛏️ Happy !

The thing I love most about palaeoart is when you're reconstructing something and it turns out looking different to how you would have expected, but in a way that makes total sense!
I love it when the reconstruction process throws up something unexpected!

For those of you fascinated by the latest episode, here are a couple of articles for you to read about the research.

The first is from the LA Times, and was the article that led me to invite Dr Emily Sessa to be a guest on the show:

Jens Heimdahl: "Vad var laukr?" [Eng sum: What was laukr?]
The context of laukr (‘leek’/’onion’) in sagas and inscriptions, implies that this plant was central as a symbol and tool in magic.

New paper alert from Elena Stiles in the ! Work on the impact of the 66 Ma K-Pg mass extinction impacted land plants in the Americas. Mass extinctions have complex impacts--the K-Pg in North America was quite different from South America!

Seattle was pretty warm over the weekend, but what did Washington look like when the climate was warmer? (Maybe even downright tropical?) On this OG episode of , Knute Berger explores the Burke Museum's collection to find out what the Evergreen State once looked like, and how these specimens might help scientists prepare for a warming climate. kcts9.org/show/mossbacks-north

I'm working on something big-ish atm which'll hopefully be useful, but unfortunately I'm not sure when it'll be finished (hopefully soon). So to hold you over till then here's another one of the diagrams from it!

I've done a bit more work on Bahariya Formation fossil . This is an infographic showing the possible distributions of different plants and their rough sizes and life habits. These are based on both macro and microfossils.
This was made as test-run reference guide for paleoartists, so if you have feedback on this style/how well it conveys information/ clarity/usefulness etc, I'd greatly appreciate any comments you may have!
