Ooooh I think we might be on the trail of our big crocodile Borealosuchus! Big belt-buckle sized osteoderm (skin armor) at the Medora, ND site.

These two came prepared - they’ve been on a few digs with us, and weren’t going to let rain scare them away.

A lot of people like to call my usual artstyle , but I would say that is incorrect. Pointilism makes explicit use of color, whereas I only draw in b&w, so it is more accurate to call it .

So, here‘s my actual first attempt at pointilism. I tried to draw Baculites, a Late genus of which is notable for briefly surviving past the K-Pg impact.

Often, the smallest tells the best story. The 🇹🇿 Drilling Project studies of and other tiny organisms to better understand and its impacts during periods of time much warmer than today. For example, this core was bored into rocks, revealing details of an that existed just after one of our planet's largest mass .

Impressed by the article!! arstechnica.com/science/2023/0
Very cool writeup by Howard Lee with links to other interesting recent papers on the mysterious Thermal Maximum 56 million years ago. Fascinating!
So – near Greenland, there are ancient volcanic areas and they were responsible for and increase, and also for the sudden stop to the warming.

The areas are named and – who'd have thunk? Did get the names from or was the naming done by geologists to honour the writer? Howard Lee could have added this little info. But maybe he hasn't read Lord of the Rings .

Turbidites above the Resurrection Peninsula Ophiolite, Alaska.

We now know that the turbidites on Fox Island, near Seward AK are part of the Paleocene Orca Group.

Spectacular in scale, and thickness.

Pillow basalts of the 57 Ma Resurrection Peninsula Ophiolite, Alaska.

These are some of the most spectacular pillows I've seen.
These represent eruption of basaltic magma to the ocean floor, and they are directly related to the sheeted dike complex recently posted.

The Stellar sea lions have hauled out on a detached block with exposed flow tops.

Sheeted dike complex of the 57 Ma Resurrection Peninsula Ophiolite, Alaska.

We recently determined the age of this complex by dating zircons in sediment interbedded in the overlying pillows. One of the most spectacular sheeted dike complexes I've seen (...and difficult to access).
These are feeders for basaltic magma to reach and erupt to the ocean floor.

For this week: a skull of the periptychid 'condylarth' Ectoconus ditrigonus eroding from lower sediments of the San Juan Basin, New Mexico. The largest animal of its day, Ectoconus lived less than half a million years after the end-Cretaceous mass extinction and was about the size of a sheep.

Oops, I meant to mention @keesey 's back when I was talking about time periods... but hey, , ... it still fits here! Anyway, I am a total fan of this haunting narrative of the life of a band of in the lean years after the impact event. The art & writing are just superb, and I can't wait to see what the next issues of @keeseycomics have in store for our protagonists!
