Our family physician ordered the CT scan that led to a diagnosis of Jay’s #PancreaticCancer at an early stage (2b)! The Doc didn’t know it, but J’s family cancer history, his ashkenazi Jewish heritage on his mum’s side, & his upper belly ache, were just the sorts of variables that SHOULD have led to imaging. #FamilyPhysicians are seen 1st, & need to be educated on the symptoms of #PANCREASCANCER, as well as other factors that increase risk. Early diagnosis = improved outcomes.

Dr Eileen O’Reilly at #MSK ordered germline & somatic testing soon after Jay’s diagnosis with #PancreaticCancer, years before it was an #ASCO guideline. He was found to have a gBRCA1 mutation - targetable by #PARP inhibitor #olaparib - allowing a welcome chemo break. So grateful for the eight years we had post-diagnosis. #PancreasCancer

J’s #PancreaticCancer was borderline resectable, abutting the portal vein. The portal vein was rebuilt during surgery; still, he emerged from the #Whipple with positive margins & lymph nodes, staged at 2b. Six weeks later he began seven months of adjuvant chemo and chemo/radiation. Today, a decade later, he’d likely have been treated with neoadjuvant chemo, with the goal of negative surgical margins. Practices are evolving, with better outcomes! #Hope

My husband survived #PancreaticCancer for 8+ years. His only symptom was unrelenting pain in his upper belly. We were lucky his attentive GP ordered a CT scan, which showed an abnormailty on the pancreas. #PancreasCancer was diagnosed following MRI & endoscopic needle biopsy. He was scheduled for the complex #Whipple surgery within two weeks of diagnosis. Th pain began in December, the CT was early January, and he was in the OR by late/mid January.

We were lucky his attentive GP ordered a CT scan, which showed an abnormailty on the pancreas. #PancreasCancer was diagnosed following MRI & endoscopic needle biopsy. He was scheduled for the complex #Whipple surgery within two weeks of diagnosis. Th pain began in December, the CT was early January, and he was in the OR by late/mid January. 


Jay maintained a healthy diet and never smoked, yet was diagnosed with #PancreaticCancer. Tested at #MSK, he was found to have a #BRCA defect. His mother & aunt died of breast & ovary cancers in their 30s, and there was painful #Pancreatitis on that side of the family, most of whom were teetotalers. Genetic testing is now recommended for everyone with #PancreasCancer. I thought Jay really rocked (!) a bald head with #chemotherapy….in this case #Abraxane, or, #Nab-paclitaxel.

Life threw a growing #PublicHealth concern my way. #PancreasCancer is on track to become the 2nd leading cause of cancer deaths by 2030. As I contemplate the care my husband received at #ColumbiaSurgery and at #MSKCancerCenter I’m reminded that we were very lucky. Many people — perhaps most — are not. And patients shouldn’t require the luck of geography, superior insurance, or a decent bank balance to access basic cancer care. #HealthCareAccess
