I guess the argument is whether the hard problem exists or not. My argument is that it doesn’t probably have to.

If I want to find an opposing theory that i guess that comes at the problem from a “materialistic” position, which is most counter to my “virtual” position is #panpsychism. That would put the qualia as deriving from the universe observing itself.

As Swami Sarvapriyananda has elucidated over and over, the technical vocabulary of classical #Indian #philosophy is in a superior position to make sense of the recent trendiness of ideas like #panpsychism in #consciousness studies because of its cleanly defined demarcation between mind and Consciousness (chit), with mind conceived as simply a more “subtle” form of matter and chit defined as the Pure Witness (non-intentional) Seer (Subject). Western philosophy stumbles over these distinctions.

#Cavendish's answer to the combination for #panpsychism is to argue that a human being is less unified, & its unity more fragile, than we tend to think. In Observations 1.37q5, she compares it to the unity of a church. (As a mid-17th century Anglican, she had experience with fractious churches!)

You might think that a church is a good example of how a community can have shared epistemic states—a church, e.g., BELIEVES things, w/ varying degrees of justification.

Contemporary #panpsychism is often focused on the idea that standard subjects are composed of very small microsubjects, that are identical to microphysical entities or strictly connected with them. Subjects made of other subjects. This idea can then be exported to collectivities: macrosubjects composed of standard subjects.

The #mereology of all this is fascinating and scarcely explored. My first instinct is to say that it should work in a general, homogeneous way.
