Préparation d'un nouveau projet... Une mise à jour historiographique s'impose. 📚📚📚

And now over to the more important part for #paperhistory: you see fresh (unused) paper sheets waiting for action. Paper sheets were often being stored next to your writing table, a very patiently waiting resource.
Using papers in 1580 (and later) had always a material history of purchasing and storing included. Every office was a paper storing and using space.

The story of communication with paper artifacts includes a big chapter on storing, dear #histodons.
What you see on the engraving is a paper using man in late sixteenth-century Europe. You see Abraham Gorlaeus or his brother David, both being born around mid sixteenth-century. However, the engraving is dated exactly 1580, the place is #Haarlem, and the print is nowadays hosted at the #Rijksmuseum in #Amsterdam.
A thread for those enjoying #paperhistory and #bookhistory alike.

@dbellingradt @histodons Such an interesting thread. The Vermeer exhibition tickets btw were completely sold out in just two days, indicating huge interest by the public in the artist and his paintings. This research on paper history and Vermeer would be fascinating to them too, no doubt. #Vermeer #Art #PaperHistory
And another thread for #histodons enjoying #paperhistory. Today, we focus on #cartography as a paper art.
You see the famous painting of late seventeenth-century from the Dutch Johannes #Vermeer that reflects some of the paper usages of early modern cartography: "De geograaf" was a paper using man; early modern #cartography was a paper world of its own.
By the way, the #Rijksmuseum in #Amsterdam just opened an exhibition on Vermeer these days: https://www.rijksmuseum.nl/en/johannes-vermeer?ss=

And another #PaperHistory thread for those interested in the material worlds of the past, dear #histodons.
You see a trompe l'oeil painting from 1883 by Walter Goodman: The Printsellers Window. It may have also been called the Papersellers Window https://magart.rochester.edu/objects-1/info/3889
Let's have a deeper look at the paper worlds present in this painting. The nineteenth-century in Europe was, just like the early modern period, a paper world of its own: another paper age. Paper was everywhere. #History

You see a European artist's worktable from mid seventeenth century. These worktables were places where paper was used, a place where ink, quills, and paper was stored and handy. Let's focus on this in more detail, a short thread for friends of #paperhistory.

Das kommt einem heute so vor wie ein Kunstprojekt, für das einmal, die damals aktuelle #wikipedia ausgedruckt wurde: Irgendwie … unpassend
Almost hidden: an opened small book, a bound copy, with another resting eyeglass on top. These bound books were the favorite focus of #bookhistory, but they were only one small part of the paper artifacts used and produced in Europe's first paper age.
Good bye, friends of #paperhistory, this thread has come to an end.

So much paper in this 1665 painting from Cornelis N. Gijsbrechts. You see an open cupboard door, as art history labelled the image, but what you also see: prints, letters, a broadside, an almanac, stored unused paper sheets. Early Modern Europe was a paper age. Gijsbrechts' painting has it all: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Cornelis_Norbertus_Gijsbrechts_-_An_Open_Cupboard_Door_-_1665.jpg
Let's focus on this in more detail, dear #paperhistory, and #bookhistory experts, and #histodons interested in the material worlds of the past. Here we go, next paper thread.

The painting features even more bottles with paper wrappers or paper pluggers. Have a look yourself. #PaperHistory
As this room is full of papers, almanacs glued to the wall, old paper books lying around, a broadside glued to the window shutter, another broadside glued to the wall storing also letters or comments made on paper sheets, I sense this paper re-usage to protect liquids in bottles was a common thing? Historians of early modern apothecaries, do you know more? #histodons

What do we see here, a torn out paper sheet used as a wrapper? The old book is lying next to the painted scene, so paper sheets seem to have been available. As reusing paper was a thing in early modern Europe, I am curious to hear your opinions, dear experts of #paperhistory, #bookhistory and #histodons in general.
I'll post the full oil painting from Luis Paret, a Spanish artist, who made this around 1780 in the next toot. Thank you for your suggestions, comments and help. Let's boost.

While consumption and usage of paper is one story, such paintings remind us also to ask: where came all that paper from, who traded it, under which conditions. In short, the paper trade needs more attention. Early modern Europe's paper consumption was messier than the history of books and the history of administration addresses so far, dear #bookhistory experts. It was a paper business of dealing with vast amounts of used papers in need for storage, re-usage or recycling, and fresh paper "waiting" to be used. Paper and its material flows were present in this paper age. #paperhistory
