Cyanotype from digital negative, from paper negative, 40 mins exposure.

That's it now until I return from a canoeing trip next week.

I'm thinking, right now, that cyanotype on the 100% Iris paper won't work.

Everytime I coat the paper it is as if the chemistry is reacting with it...? I will make an exposure but end up with just a blue piece of paper, no image...

Some significant learning in the process:
It's not as easy as it looks, especially to get both an even thickness and just the right thickness of sheet...

With Iris, maybe adjust the cooking time to be slightly longer.

With both recycled material and natural - blend more than I think.

It's quite fun, if you like a wet & messy activity..!

Mold & Deckle constructed. Final size 9.5" x 14".

I now have 1.5lb of Flag Iris cooking. My 1st attempts will be just that...

Intention is to make two papers, initially:
1x 100% Flag Iris
1x 50% Flag Iris + 50% recycled Cardboard.

Moving on, will be the use of seaweed as a Formation Aid, the addition of internal sizing, use of different plant fibres, addition of local sourced Mica to give a different texture, & finally using the papers for Cyanotype printing.

I haven't yet attempted making papier-mâché furniture but do know of some artisans who have done this (i.e., small side tables, chairs, etc.). It's fairly challenging & also takes a good deal of strategic planning because structural integrity is an issue. Items are typically reinforced with other materials like corrugated cardboard, wire, etc. Think I'll stick with the smaller items for now.🤣

The idea is to make beautiful-but-practical items for the home. So, in other words, these papier-mâché projects hopefully aren't anything like the ones many of us remember making in elementary school.😂 Yeah, so nothing like those papier-mâché balloons that never dried, papier-mâché + coat-hanger wire Pterodactyl mobiles, or "I-think-it's-a-cat-no-wait-it's-supposed-to-be-a-monkey" childhood art installations.🤣

Also useful is a dedicated blender for easier pulp processing + a sieve, pitcher, & rectangular tub for making paper sheets. (If you can repurpose an old blender or DIY a mould & deckle using old picture frames, all the better.) For drying, clotheslines/drying racks/clothespins/tables can be useful. In addition to papermaking & bookbinding, I upcycle paper scraps into paper clay figurines + other papier-mâché creations.

Speaking of converting "trash to treasure," a while ago, I made my own mould & deckle for DIY papermaking. So, basically, I'm my own paper recycling plant.😀 This is a great activity to do outdoors (in decent, calm weather) so that any mess-making can be better contained.😉 The results can be quite beautiful & unique. After that, paper reams can be trimmed & bound together into journals using traditional book-binding methods. It's so much fun!
