Happy to announce our “Effects of Aging on Cortical Representations of Continuous Speech” by Dushyanthi Karunathilake et al (including @StefKuchinsky) doi.org/10.1101/2022.08.22.504
(A fall announcement was delayed by the rise-of-mastodon-downfall-of-twitter process)
Using magnetoencephalography (MEG), we investigated how continuous speech is represented in auditory cortex in the presence of interfering speech, in younger & older adults.

Check out Janine’s new paper on TMS multi-pulse I-wave independent short-interval intracortical facilitating in press in JNeurophysiol by Hartwig Siebner, Mitsuaki Takemi, Anke Karabanov and Lasse Christiansen.
doi.org/10.1152/jn.00263.2022

Kesselheim et al. find that delivering two or more pulses at interstimulus intervals corresponding to the peaks of individual SICF curves - but also the trough between the 1st and 2nd peak - facilitate MEPs and reduce corticomotor threshold.

TMS bursts facilitate corticomotor excitability via two mechanisms: SICF-dependently via fast-conducting direct projections from M1-HAND to spinal motoneurons and SICF–independently probably through slower conducting indirect pyramidal tract projections.

We argue that an exclusive focus on I-wave periodicity is too narrow when aiming at understanding how TMS excites the precentral motor representations. The role of the I-wave independent facilitation in the control and development of skilled movement deserves more attention.

The full connectome of the fruit fly is slowly being mapped out.
But how do we make sense of it? Sometimes the anatomy is highly suggestive of a function, but more often than not there are much more connections than we expect and the interpretation is complicated.

I've been slowly collecting papers that try to link a simulation of the connectome with a fly behavior.

Here, I'd like to share one such paper, which uses modeling and connectomics to study the link between development and fly preferences for a particular odor.

The paper is:
"Neural correlates of individual odor preference in Drosophila"
Churgin & Lavrentovich et al
(senior author @debivort )
biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/20

I presented the paper in the @tuthill journal club this week and wanted to share it here while it's still in my head! 🧵

Hot off the press! 🔥
doi.org/10.1016/j.neubiorev.20

We performed a meta-analysis of neuroimaging studies looking at interpersonal neural synchronization (INS) and contextualized the results using diverse public databases to develop new hypotheses on physiological processes potentially involved in INS.

Super-short summary: We report spatial convergence of INS in the right TPJ and left ventral PFC and find preliminary evidence for associations of INS with mentalizing and attention brain networks, GABA-mediated E/I balance, and disordered neurodevelopment.

What is he talking about, you ask? See below ⏬

I think that‘ll require a critical mass but I think that instances related to institutions and subjects may in the end lead to a specific way of s. Maybe even with some more technical integration into publishing platforms.
It‘s all new in some ways for all of us, even for those who have been on Mastodon for a while :-)

To me it feels like the ultimate Pokemon game: Catching all the interesting accounts!

Thread about new paper: People with lower impulsive personality traits take fewer risks in a gambling task. But how does the brain translate a stable trait into momentary decisions? Apparently the preSMA is a core player: perturbing it with TMS decouples trait and state impulsivity.

This we show in our new paper by Allan Lohse and @dav_meder at the @DRCMR: “Linking impulsivity to activity levels in pre-supplementary motor area during sequential gambling.” jneurosci.org/content/early/20

While scanning participants with fMRI, they played a gambling task where they repeatedly throw a die and accumulate points, until they stop and bank their winnings or until throwing a 1 which leads to the loss of the accumulated points.

should not be contaminated by bot content! It’s only for human-generated threads on scientific papers. It looks like what you’re suggesting should have a different hashtag to keep things separate? (But maybe I misunderstood)

I’d be in on and . Although I’d prefer bc grammar 😋.

And I am not sure how much sense it makes to let a single field „claim“ a very general tag such as . It would be more elegant to establish a convention for all fields, i.e., for field-independent use, or for the Sigmoidians. Sorry folks 👀

@NicoleCRust field-specific hashtags for paper announcements and threads might not work so well for those of us with poor memories and interests across multiple fields, because we would have to remember the specific hashtags for each field.

The Mastodon advanced web interface allows you to follow combinations of hashtags (instructions here: blog.djnavarro.net/posts/2022-) but it doesn't appear to allow for ( AND ( OR )), plus I think I found a bug.

For now, I think I will follow ( OR OR OR OR ...).

Plus, I'm copying in @cogsci and because this is an issue that needs to be discussed in all research communities.

I hoped to, at least a little bit, speed up the process of findings the preferred tag... I will likely tag my next "paper thread" with all tags bc the poll suggests that there is no real favourite yet.
Will be fun: , , , ,

I totally agree with you on the hashtag extensions. Maybe, bc it's more intuitive, one could go for #<Topic>PaperThread, #<Topic>ResearchPaper, and so on?

A big thanks to @kendmiller + for helping the community get its hashtag act together!

neuromatch.social/@kendmiller@

For neuro paper threads: sigmoid.social/about/more has already claimed and (the latter announcing a paper without a thread) for the AI community. I enjoy seeing their papers too, but we need a distinct tag for neuro papers. For a thread, ... maybe we want something simple like and ?

Great idea Ken - let's do this.

➡️EVERYONE: BOOKMARK THIS! ⬅️ and follow those hashtags. And then don't hold back. After all, it's what we all show up here for: to hear what you've figured out and learn from you.

Hi community! A few days ago, a post of mine recieved a lot of attention. Thanks for the engagement and the very interesting suggestions! neuromatch.social/@LeonDLotter

On , I loved the common practice of writing threads explaining new and in an understandable way.
I uttered my concern that through the chronological timeline here people might miss interesting science. A solution would be to agree on names for hashtags and/or a.gup.pe groups to ease tracking these "paper threads".

Following tags were named more then once: .
Also, there was , but that might be a slightly different category?

I heard people like participation - so let's do a poll! What's your favourite tag for threads explaining research articles? 📊 Multiple choices possible!

In our new project we show typical structural & functional motifs like modularity, small-worldness, functional clusters, mixed selectivity & efficiency emerge in these spatially-embedded RNNs
