In the Egyptian magical papyri a lamp divination is commonly called:

"shen en pa chebes"
"Inquiry with/of the lamp".

A common formula is:
"He/you shall give answer to me about all words concerning which I ask, here and today, in true words, without words of falsehood."

A core problem with the #translation of the #Demotic #magical #papyri in the PGM publication edited by Betz is that the translator (J. H. Johnson) didn’t consistently differentiate between words she interpreted as "voces magicae" and the names of higher powers, thus making it impossible for the reader to recognize these deities as deities.

It's not that difficult if you read the original text closely, since in #Demotic the names of deities are written with the god’s determinative at the end.

Meet the #ancient #Egyptian city Soknopaiou Nesos, the cult centre of the god Soknopaios, an oracular god in the shape of a #crocodile with #falcon head.

Countless #papyri were discovered here, among them an inventory list of the #cult objects and details about the priest's work.
