The history of Paraceratherium is incredibly complex. Made all the more difficult by the language and political boundaries surrounding its discovery.

The earliest known fossils date from Pakistan in 1846. But it wasn't described until 1908. It was placed in the wastebasket taxon of Aceratherium.

In 1910, Clive Foster-Cooper reclassified it as Paraceratherium.

In 1923 a Russian academy scientist named a fossil Indricotherium.
