With a quick glance via Google, I found images of carpet pythons in trees and articles about large boluses on roofs. If this is typical behavior, another route of infection is easy to imagine. The fresh feces falls and splatters soiling the leaves. Or, when it rains, the bolus liquifies and splashes below.

There are remarkable examples where the pathogen and host coevolve to improve predation and transmission. Cats and T. gondii. Racoons and Baylisascaris procyonis. Is the Ophidascaris CNS infection a loud echo of Baylisascaris?

The news is covering the human Ophidascaris infection as an oddity. If that's what it is, then that's what it is. If instead it's an instance of a pattern of host - parasite evolution, that's something important.

In Natural History of Infectious Disease Sir Frank Macfarlane Burnet outlines the principle that pathogen and host tend to equilibrium / accommodation. The exception that he lists is where there is more than one host. The pathogen then will tend to increase in virulence in one.

When I started watching this⬇️ interview with the neurosurgeon, I was thinking "Did the doctor get creeped out - nah, you have to have nerves of steel to be a neurosurgeon."

She got creeped out.

The Ophidascaris robertsi roundworm is common in carpet pythons - non-venomous snakes found across much of Australia.

Scientists say the woman most likely caught the roundworm after collecting a type of native grass, Warrigal greens, beside a lake near where she lived. bbc.com/news/world-australia-6

A live worm. In the brain. 🐛 🧠 😱

'The neurosurgeon, Dr Hari Priya Bandi, had pulled an 8cm-long parasitic roundworm from her patient, prompting her to call on Senanayake and other hospital colleagues for advice about what to do next.

The patient, a 64-year-old woman from south-eastern New South Wales, was first admitted to her local hospital in late January 2021 after suffering three weeks of abdominal pain and diarrhoea, followed by a constant dry cough, fever and night sweats'

Amazing. Coincidentally, bees are host to the bee louse (), which is nothing other than a wingless fly adapted to live on bee bodies … just like bat flies do on bats.
