Here is a Forty-spotted Pardalote on north Bruny Island Tasmania about ten years ago. It appears to be smiling.

My new book, "More Australian Birding Tales, A highly personal account of birding, life and travel in the land down under" is available worldwide as well as my first book, "An Australian Birding Year" both by John Beaufoy Publishing, Oxford, England.

Sending love as I do ā¤ļø

This teeny tiny bird is one of Australia's smallest and also prettiest.

The first time a Spotted Pardalote caught my attention, I mistook it for a cicada!

Spending most of its time feeding in the eucalyptus canopy, it’s often referred to as the ā€˜Headache Bird’ due to its continuous ā€œsleep-may-beā€ mating call.

Known as the Bilyabit or Widopwidop by the Noongar people, this bird is one of the few to nest in both tree hollows and earth tunnels.

I hope you enjoy my portrait of the Spotted Pardalote.

Australian bird series: #2
