I binged this show - 53 episodes in 2 weeks. It was amazing. All the actors were phenomenal. Such a beautiful story. It made me laugh and sob (a lot). I was infuriated and astonished at some characters some of the time and so happy and grateful for them at other times. If you want to be a mess of emotion, this is perfect! It only dragged momentarily in a couple of episodes. The side storylines are so well done and the 3 main story lines are so engaging that 53 episodes seemed fast.

What Happens To My Family?

The 1st 5 eps seemed really sitcom like to me and I wasn't sure, but the drama came barreling in around episode 6. It is meant to be funny most of the time - great, silly sound effects and over-the-top reactions to things, but I have been in tears a few times already.

53 eps may seem like too many, but I have faith. It's like 3 dramas in one with each child in the family having a main story line and the side stories are good too. Love triangles, maybe enemies to lovers, arranged marriages, an aunt who can't keep her mouth shut, meddling mothers & cousin, 3 chaebols - it's full of the best of kDrama.

I thought I'd give this update 17 eps in because who knows if it will still be available in the U.S. by the time I finish all 53 eps. There isn't another long holiday weekend for a while.

If I wasn't on a PHS Quest (watch everything with Park Hyung Sik) I don't know that I would have considered watching a 53 1hr eps drama. I have been so pleasantly surprised! I ended up binging over the holiday weekend and am on episode 17 now.

I am watching for PHS, but I was pleased to see other familiar actors. Yoon Park shows up as a guy you love to hate, reminiscent of "Forcasting Love & Weather." I saw Nam Ji Hyun in "Suspicious Partner," but I like her character here better. After seeing Seo Kang Joon in "When the Weather is Nice," I was going to look for more shows with him and here he is! There are several other familiar faces too!

More thoughts on “Strong Woman Do Bong Soon”.

The more I thought about this, the more I thought about how different people might interpret it.

After the first meeting of the lead couple (which happens fairly early in the 1st episode, so this is not really a spoiler), the ML comments to his secretary that the FL is sexy. Some people may think he’s referring to her looks, but I took it to mean that he thought the sly way she just insulted him was sexy.

He’s a young, good-looking, CEO-chaebol and probably hasn’t had many people ever question him and she takes him down a peg on their first meeting. This interpretation flavored my experience of the entire rest of the series. I think if you miss that insult and how much it surprises & tickles him, you might interpret a lot of things differently.

This is rich chaebol (with trauma), but the girl is more middle-class and she has super powers which make her strong & vulnerable at the same time. I felt they were equals always - but in complementary ways. (He’s educated, she’s not, she’s more open with her feelings, he’s not.) Even though he teases her about not being smart (so does her family) there are several scenes where you can see how much he admires her.

If you watch, he is very jealous and manipulative at first, especially when he doesn’t understand his feelings, but there is a lot of character growth for both of them.

My favorite is “Strong Woman Do Bong Soon”.

You’ve seen the leads willing to risk their lives to protect their loves, but In SWDBS, not only does he risk his life more than once, his love for her is so profound that he is willing to … (well, I can’t say because that would be a spoiler - but you’ll need tissues).

I’ve seen comments where people complain about the ML being the manipulative, spoiled, rich chaebol, but if you watch closely the FL has him wrapped around her little finger and he loves it. He is also sweet about respecting where she is in acknowledging her own feelings. It’s a beautifully developed love story with romance, silliness, and acceptance.

If you can’t tolerate the silly gangsters, then it would be hard to watch, BUT it does have (IMHO) one of the best love stories ever.

I have rewatched the love story part about a dozen times - but you have to get a few episodes in to start to see that story really develop.

The gangsters end up bringing comic relief from the horrible criminal activities.

I completely agree with you about Pyo Ye-jin, both in Our Blooming Youth & What’s Wrong with Secretary Kim. I haven’t watched Taxi Driver yet, so I don’t know her role there. I will be on the lookout for her work.

@s1m0n4 I would agree that I would have liked to see all the romances more fully played out - I think the sergeant and princess, the servant and teacher, and the prince and his love. I like a more definite ending, but the I also think the writers are stuck in a quandry. If they pick an ending that doesn't align with the audience's feelilngs, then they complain. By leaving these things ambiguous, everyone gets to imagine their own happy ending. I would have loved to have seen at least a couple more episodes showing how everyone ended up living happily ever after. Still gets a 10 out of 10 stars from me because in my imagination, the ending is wonderful.

Just finished my first historical k-drama and I'm still totally in love with Park Hyng-sik (shhh don't tell my husband!). I found the unfolding of clues a bit slow and then everything was rushed in episodes 17 to 20.

More than the female lead actress, I appreciated Pyo Ye-jin's performance (Ga-ram). She was already remarkable in #whatswrongwithsecretarykim and she absolutely deserves a lead role!
