In my opinion, the best time for a to is late summer to autumn. Most of the predatory mosquitos are gone from Alaska & Yukon by then; and at least by autumn there are fewer tourists, so it's easier to get a campsite in some of the most heavily trafficked areas. It starts getting a bit chilly at night, but if you time it right, it's not enough below freezing at night to worry overly-much about freezing your holding tanks at night.

On our second Alaska trip, we were returning through Whitehorse at exactly the right time. All the campgrounds there were closed, but welcomed in their parking lot. So we camped there overnight, and restocked for the trip south.
