As threads here are awkward, below is the link to my thread on Twitter on George Canning's recognition of the importance of female influence in elections and - surprisingly - his linking of parliamentary reform with female enfranchisement. Canning was speaking from the hustings during the by-election of 1818.

"I hope His Majesty's Ministers will take into their serious consideration what I now say. I do not utter it with any feelings of hostility,...but I trust they will take my warning, and save the country by abandoning the present system before it is too late."

@PaulWillner The "representative" part of representative democracy seems to majority wise absent in the houses of parliament.... except when their own interests are being discussed.

Too busy eating lavish meals and cut-price wine at our expense I suppose 😐. Except for Cruella of course who is probably heiling in the mirror and birching herself.

Had Cochrane in 1818 not decided to go to South America and become Admiral of the Chilean navy, I am pretty sure they sooner or later would have thrown him into prison again. I am utterly convinced that from the moment on he became a MP he was surrounded by informers and spies watching his political activities closely.

It really is time for the government to be reformed:
* No head of church as head of state
* No bishops in parliament
* No religious ceremony in governance
* No hereditary power and unelected house of parliament

"The petitioners have a full and immovable conviction - a conviction which they believe to be universal throughout the kingdom - that the House (of Commons) does not, in any constitutional or rational sense, represent the nation; that, when the people have ceased to be represented, the Constitution is subverted; that taxation without representation is a state of slavery."
Lord Cochrane summarising two petitions which he presented to parliament in 1817.
