Shavua tov! It's time for another thread of #ParshahThoughts on this past week's #parshah, Ki Tisa. This will be somewhat of a sequel to my thread on parshat Yitro (

The parsha of Ki Tisa begins with the instruction to “lift up the heads” of the people by collecting a half shekel from each household. This appears to be an idiom for a census, a “head count”, but it is also instructive. When we give charity of even a small amount, our heads are lifted up from our own personal concerns and we become active participants in the larger community. We become a part of something greater and nobler.

Shavua tov! Here are some slightly belated thoughts on last week's #parshah, Mishpatim. I'm going to try something a little different this week and instead of just listing a few random thoughts, I will be going through the chronology of Matan Torah. 🧵 1/

He shall pay for the loss of his work, and he shall fully heal him. (Exodus 21:19)
Here we learn that a physician is allowed to heal [and we do not say that we must leave it up to God].
(Talmud, Bava Kamma 85a)
When Rabbi Menachem Mendel of Lubavitch was told his daughter-in-law was sick with no hope of recovery, he said: “The Talmud derives that ‘a physician is allowed to heal.’ But nowhere has a doctor been given the right to declare a human being incurable.”

At the Sea of Reeds, the Jewish people found themselves between a rock and a hard place - the encroaching Egyptian army to one side and the waters below to the other. Nachshon ben Aminadav dove into the sea, forging ahead until its waters reached up to his neck.
Then the sea split.
In life, don’t wait for your sea to split. Dive in. Then it will.

As Jewish people around the world stand in their synagogues and listen to the Ten Commandments read from the Torah this Shabbos, we are re-enacting the original event, in which we stood together at Mount Sinai “as one person with one heart.” Have a great Shabbos!

Parshat Yitro is the first time someone says, “Baruch Hashem!”
“And Yitro said, ‘Blessed be Hashem who has rescued you from the hands of the Egyptians!’” (Exodus 18:10)
When we notice the ways that God is a blessing in our lives, we make our world a little brighter. King David advised that each person count their blessings by making at least 100 blessings each day. #Blessed
