@tfromnyc Good idea! minimum for NYC is $25k. I have no idea how to cost this out, but you could probably rent space on quite a few servers for that much. I'll do the same with mine in with

My city's participatory budgeting was rolled out in 2016 pre-gutted.

It's a little "fun" money for the ballot for things like a bus shelter, pool shade, crosswalk, game table, gazebo, water fountain.

People get excited about it and feel empowered. 😬

@atthenius @stevenbodzin I have an email for a person I believe is the chief of staff. I do have quite a few contacts with that office as I did some stuff with them last year (2021-2022 cycle). That experience left such a bad taste in my mouth that I did not participate in the current cycle. There may not be a cycle this year as is asking all councilmembers for their discretionary money.

Lerner points to other cities like Paris, where participatory budgeting has radically shifted its budget priorities: “New York’s program is really the exception, not the norm, from an international perspective and I think it’s holding possibilities back.”

I printed out this snippet of Ariel Aberg-Riger's budget explainer when I started as an analyst [bloomberg.com/news/articles/20].

Today it's got me thinking about creative ways to grow the accessibility & engagement of our budget story.

I’m inspired by Kenneth Mejia's LA campaign graphics, the in Seattle, and Mural Arts Philadelphia's “A People’s Budget” project.

What examples should I read up on? Particularly interested in implementations.

@kironbondale I worked and strategized for a municipal campaign that ran on for the entire city among other things - no success either, so I can commiserate a bit about that.

Vote turnout was slightly higher, and while my candidate did not win, there was at least a bit more diversity on city council afterwards, though largely it was incumbents, so agreed, "devil you know."

Reading the late Erik Olin Wright’s 2009 “Envisioning Real Utopias” tonight. I’m simultaneously borne aloft by his generosity of spirit, and a trifle depressed that of the four institutions he chose as examples of practical steps toward postcapitalist flourishing – , Wikipedia, the coops and the – at least three seem to have been coopted, neutralized, recuperated or cut short of achieving what seemed to be their promise in the recent past.
