Promising improvements to air conditioning efficiency on the horizon!

scientificamerican.com/article

As more and more turn to air-con to cope with rising temperatures, it will take more than using lower-energy-consuming air-conditioners, though - designing passive cooling through architecture, greenery, ponds etc. are necessary

@johnb48 The old fashioned and terribly primitive buildings that used to be built in Texas—by Mexicans, back when Texas was Mexico—didn't have air-conditioning.

Except not so "primitive", adobe was a lot cooler that what gringos think a house looks like.

Too bad it doesn't get nice and cool at night anymore, even adobe doesn't work so well now.

Has anyone installed external shutters, blinds or other active cooling effectively in the UK? Especially in a terrace. It looks like planning permission is needed, and will probably be refused? Do you need to invert windows? Experts say AC is a last resort, but the alternatives look *difficult*?

Yeah ok found my surface temp measuring thermometer finally. So in conclusion... yes even crudely done (as I have no other mode of operation) BaSo4 Acrylic paint does work better at rejecting heat than normal TiO2 paint.

@W9SSN right… why not. So anecdotally… with the battery in direct Sun in a situation, where, previously it would’ve been too hot to touch, was merely warm. I haven’t had a chance yet to take the radio out but I will do soon.

Why yes I am glad you asked.

I'm now making Barium Sulfate acrylic paint in my garage.
Let the experiments commence.

@ai6yr nice, another candidate for experimental control.

I'm excited to do some "amateur" tinkering with BaSO4 as a pigment in some kind of methacrylate (or other) resin. I think making use of BaSO4's focused emissivity in the IR Sky window, even crudely done, has some serious benefits.

I don't pretend to understand everything in this paper, but the conclusion paragraph is pretty clear.

Ok so the paper indicates that the BaSO₄ film and paint they made was able to achieve some significant cooling. On the order of 117 W/m^2. The paint is BaSO₄ nanoparticles (400 nm diameter) with dimethylformamide in a 60% volume concentration.

@IU1KGS "yes and"... I was inspired to look into it by the fact that my LightSaver Max shut down charging because of heat multiple times during a recent activation, but as you point out I do have other equipment that could use come . I have many applications clattering around in the back of my mind for a very thin high cooling power coating.

Just downloaded their paper from the American Chemical Society paper on the topic. Hopefully I'll find some time to read that in the near future and come up with some application methods.

“Beating the heat: These plant-based iridescent films stay cool in the sun”
“The technical term for this approach is passive daytime radiative cooling (PDRC), so named because it doesn’t require an injection of energy into the system to disperse heat. The surface emits its own heat into space without being absorbed by the air or atmosphere, thereby becoming several degrees cooler than the surrounding air without needing electrical energy.”
