This is the passive solar house I mentioned in my previous post. Built in 1980, it had period-appropriate style and colors: chocolate brown tile floors to soak up sunlight, forest green carpets and wallpaper, brass fixtures. Almost no glass to the north, almost all glass to the south, with overhangs that shaded the windows in the summer. Most of these photos were taken during construction. I did all the tile, most of the trim and interior painting.

@Moira @ai6yr wow, I had no idea the French had so many fruit walls! And the second part of the article, about modern (mostly Chinese) passive greenhouses is really hopeful!

As some of you may know, I built a house recently. I wanted to make it as energy efficient as possible.

I live in a very cold, but sunny climate, so we designed the house using techniques.

Yesterday was an interesting day.

- The avg outdoor temp was -11.5c/11.2f

- My thermostat is set to 19.5c/67f day, and 16.5c/62f night

- My furnace ran for a total 2h54m all day (~1/8th day)

Everything else was retained or provided by sun coming through the south facing windows.

bc my mom worked extra hard to make me feel completely average (if not stupid), I assumed for a long time that everyone could visualize complex constructs. they can’t, so I’ve learned to make tools to help when words aren’t enough. I know they won’t be able to see what I see, but helping them see more clearly is thrilling. I made a thing to help visualize how the sun shines along the 46th parallel. the low beam is winter, high beam is summer.

Concentrating the dispersed - The dominant profits by concentrating dispersed energy sources, and , and redistributing the energy as a commodity. Instead, we should be using low-scale technology at the point of use, e.g. solar panels on all buildings, neighborhood wind generators, buildings and much more and much lower .

It’s a typical cool December day in southern Indiana, but our passive solar design has already gotten the living room to 73F and that heat will be stored and transported into the rest of the house well into the evening.

To think that there was a plan to organize America’s political map, down to the county level, by watershed rather than by arbitrary grid. How different would the country be today? youtu.be/Qny4CDcftrI

I used a computer like this to write my thesis at in 1982 on the performance of an experimental # home I helped build.
Started it by manually entering a 3 byte JMP instruction to an address in the ROM resetting the address bus switches to 0 and depressing the GO switch.
The OS in ROM was probably CPM. It enabled me to use emacs to write/edit and save onto 8” floppies.

About time for my post, so here goes:

My name is Nick, in Naarm/Melbourne, I’m a who came to the trades late in life - partly to build resilience for the inevitable climate chaos we’re hurtling towards, and partly to try to make a tangible difference in a sector that is horribly lagging behind in its climate responsibilities (at least in this country). I’m working to build the skills to be able to become a builder of affordable, sustainable, energy efficient, low carbon, climate resilient homes - have a passion for and building, as well as and

I’m conscious of the privilege I’ve had in my birth lottery, so I’m trying to be a good ally towards LGBTQ+ and indigenous people

I came here as a but actually much prefer the non commercial and decentralised nature of the platform, and I really hope it takes off. I would love to be able to delete twitter entirely. I’m all about data privacy, , and absolutely as a basis for the internet.

Politically I’m a leftist but still figuring out my labels. Have my doubts about electoralism but still hopeful we can improve our society without revolution, even if I think that’s getting more and more likely with climate change induced chaos.

I’m a parent of 2 little legends and every decision I make is filtered through the lens of how that will influence the world they grow up in. Also have two amazing doggos ❤️

Anyway, nice to meet you all and can’t wait to see what mastodon can grow to become!
