I wonder if patent trolls aka NPEs are concerned about the rising cost of doing business? Or does tech giants banding together against them like this just a minor cost? https://www.unifiedpatents.com/insights/2023/7/24/soundstreak-texas-av-recording-patent-found-invalid-in-reexam

#USA #Patents #IP #PatentTrolls: "The U.S. Patent Office has proposed new rules about who can challenge wrongly granted patents. If the rules become official, they will offer new protections to patent trolls. Challenging patents will become far more onerous, and impossible for some. The new rules could stop organizations like EFF, which used this process to fight the Personal Audio “podcasting patent,” from filing patent challenges altogether.
We need EFF supporters to speak out against this proposal, which is a gift for patent trolls. We’re asking supporters who care about a fair patent system to file comments using the federal government’s public comment system. Your comments don’t need to be long, or use fancy legalese. The important thing is that everyday users and creators of technology get a chance to state their opposition to these rules. Below the button you can see a simple proposed comment you can cut-and-paste; you can also add to it, or write your own."

#USA #Patents #IP #PatentTrolls: "Government officials should be working to reduce, not increase, the burden that low-quality patent lawsuits impose on innovators. So we’re concerned and dismayed by recent briefs filed by the U.S. Solicitor General, asking the Supreme Court to reexamine and throw out the best legal defenses regular people have against “patent trolls”—companies that don’t make products or provide services, but simply use patents to sue and threaten others."

#PatentTrolls - who secure "with a computer" patents and then extract ransoms from people doing normal things on threat of a lawsuit - are an underappreciated form of "#TechExceptionalism." Normally, "tech exceptionalism" refers to bros who wave away things like privacy invasions by arguing that "with a computer" makes it all different.

#patentTrolls just suck, they offer no benefit to anything, except to themselves. Nothing. I just read this, where #Intel owes $2+ billion to a company that doesn't produce anything, except the law suit, that is. https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2021-03-02/intel-told-to-pay-2-18-billion-after-losing-texas-patent-trial
So i was thinking, they should make a law so that a #patent is considered abandon(ie can't sue), if the owner has no plans on producing anything using the patent concept or anything derived from the original idea. Seem like a common sense solution.
