Oh no, why did I add drawing to my path tracer? Now I can't help but make really bad scenes by scribbling! Too many too bright lights! Anyways, I fixed a formula! Turns out, you shouldn't just write down a PDF via cliffnotes, that way you forget a factor of 2... That was likely the reason for some too bright images when doing many indirections. Also light pixels now get their color correctly (with some reasonable assumptions).

Added pixel lights to my 2D pixel path tracer! Having the pixels both be elements with area and the primitive pixel block is kind of annoying though lol. So inside of pixels, the lighting isn't technically correct, but it's only slightly off and doesn't effect the surroundings, so it's fine, I think. Otherwise, due to it being 2D you wouldn't see the bounds that well

2D pixel path tracer works (basic version)! Need to check the 2D sampling and pdf formulas (just scribbled them down on a paper lol, but they should be mostly correct). No different materials yet, but light and indirections! 🎉 Normals are only from the pixels, but average out over distance naturally (like a microfacet 👀). Video shows using different number of bounces. Hope the mastodon conversion stays watchable. Need to draw a better scene 😅

The Multiple Importance Sampling (MIS) by Veach scene is probably one of the most famous path tracing images? Despite today's more sophisticated methods and images, seeing the method in action will always be wonderful to me. Attached is a video of a small real-time demo I made. I also added images with the same sample amount for MIS/BRDF/Light sampling. It is magical to see the different convergence rates!

Oooch en avec une c'est quand même très impressionnant de réalisme. Après, j'ai l'impression que le contraste est plus marqué. Donc les zones d'ombres sont plus sombres, donc moins lisibles.

mit dem neuen Renderer sieht fast unanständig gut aus. 🤤 Unglaublich, diese Technologie in Echtzeit in einem so aufwändigen Spiel zu sehen; bisher war das auf Remasters von Retro-Games wie Quake und Portal beschränkt. Komme mit der 4090 auf stabile 50 fps (DLSS3 geht mangels VRR Display leider nicht), was vollkommen ausreichend ist (hatte es zuvor mit einer 3080 auch schon so gespielt - mit "normalem" ).

This is huge! Sure Minecraft and Quake 2 both already showed that a fully path-traced game was possible a couple years ago. But now we have a modern AAA title that exclusively traces rays without any tradition rasterization in the mix. This will be a huge boon both for devs/artists and gamers who want ultra-realistic graphics. But... You currently need a GeForce 4090 + DLSS 3 to get a good framerate.

A rendering-stats overlay would be nice for ... SDL-ttf to the rescue! Also pumped out high quality renders of the triangle-test, cornell-box and "ring of balls" looks almost like a grown up path-tracer now ;)

Achievement unlocked! Did the very first animation with my toy path-tracer 'RacingBeams'. Images are stable over time and rendered across three different machines. Academy-awards... here I come ;)

Testing with storing directional incoming radiance in my texture space path tracer with a new denoiser, the result after the denoiser is a lot better than my previous attempt as it does not lose the details in the (very low res) normal maps.
