No fool. Nagumo is constantly oppressed by her "superiors", but she puts herself on the line for society tirelessly, never giving into the insipid bureaucracy. Pay careful attention to the politics and politicking in #Patlabor, it is a criticism of the Japanese government and its sheepish (and cunning) ties to the US government.
No dialogue. Just a soft gasp as Nagumo looks at Gotoh after he tells her his suspicions. Then the lights of a passing car to ominous piano music. Says so damn MUCH. #Patlabor #scifi #storytelling #lighting

Uhhhh…. I’m not sure what to make of this… #Patlabor https://youtu.be/zF3ha3NJorE
Thank you to @RichardRae for noting this article. It’s a great compliment to the accuracy of some of the military operations depictions in the movie Patlabor 2 by Mamoru Oshii. Fascinating to hear from experts on it.

Thinking about attitudes to cops in the US vs Japan, the student protests in the late 60's may have had an influence. In both, police brutally suppressed demonstrations and riots.
US protests were about the Vietnam war, and eventually they "won".
In Japan, the protests were sparked by unpaid internships at medical schools, and expanded to Marxist / anti-corporate issues. And they "lost" big time.
I bet that echoes through the years, coupled with a stronger preference for social order.
(Though in the US, Regan's reaction to protests created the whole student loan scam we have now.)

Other trivia about the original #Patlabor TV series- labors were made for giant construction projects to reclaim land lost to rising sea level.
Considering it was made in the late 80's and set around 2000, not a common theme at the time.
@YourAnonNews That's a civilian model patrol unit (possibly a Shinohara Heavy Industries AV-98 Ingram) meant to be deployed domestically in the event of misuse of construction or agricultural units in the tradition of the finest Japanese police.
Please note the distinctive police star mid-chest and the shoulder-mounted flashing lights.
#Patlabor 2 has undeniably earned a spot in the pantheon of sci-fi masterpieces. This is especially true today, as , Oshii's critiques of our growingly connected lives proved to be super uncanny.

With its vastly different scope and a storytelling style that diverges from Mamoru Oshii's focused social commentaries, WXIII is often seen as a black sheep of the #Patlabor universe. Still, it's well worth a watch, as Stephen Hero explains.

Took me a while to place this track but I think it's #Patlabor the Movie again, possibly the 2nd movie.
Ahh #Patlabor, the movie soundtrack. I really should get back to my Patlabor TV series watch through (even if I"m not a huge fan of the Griffin arc)
