i re-posted, but let me personally and emphatically re-post @kissane's new essay, because it cuts right into what i care about in some gorgeous ways, but also dares to set a high bar for imagining good things, which is my fave kind of essay. also i am a pattern language buff so love to see alexander's work drawn into the socials discourse #Systems #PatternLanguage

"This is not a book about architecture, at least not in the sense that you might find in the architecture section of a bookstore β¦ no, this is a book about faith.
It has more in common with religion, and perhaps philosophy, than with form-making and construction β¦ 1/2
π Pattern language design revolutionizes how we approach target domains - it's a massively parallel, abductive method for holistic design! But to truly harness its power, you need the right tools.π‘ #PatternLanguage #DesignThinking #UnlockPotential https://intuitionmachine.gumroad.com/l/gpt4

Still figuring out best video settings here...
Anyway, I made a little SwiftUI app to chat with AI about the book "A Pattern Language", using OpenAI embeddings.
Relevant passages of the book are fetched and used as part of the prompt when responding to me/user.
This allows for a natural conversation anchored in the actual book βΒ so, theoretically less 'hallucinations' from AI (varying with 'temp').

Currently reading Christopher Alexander's #PatternLanguage. A big influence on urban design and computer science, can't help but wonder about the crossover with transport modelling.
I've always been a fan of #TidalCycles' #pattern language. What I didn't know was that Andrew Sorensen's #Extempore #livecoding environment also has a kind of pattern language. Must investigate further.

Wondering how Christopher Alexander's notions of Wholeness and Centers, in the Phenonenon of Life, might apply to governance of cooperative or collective organizations? We typically think in terms of relations between discrete individuals, but what about the whole which is reciprocally created with the individual? Or the whole created by a group of individuals?
While many outside of the field of architecture like the #ChristopherAlexander #PatternLanguage approach, itβs not so well accepted by his peers. A summary of criticisms by #MichaelJDawes and #MichaelJOstwald #UNSWBuiltEnv is helpful in appreciating when the use of pattern language might be appropriate or not appropriate.

With the distinction made between #PatternLanguage and form language by #NikosSalingaros, a broader vision of the "life" sought by #ChristopherAlexander has led me through #GeneralSystemsTheory and #RobertRosen into the R-theory of #JohnJKineman.

Wow -- this is really interesting. I wonder how it feels to people who are new to facilitation of participatory learning? As a practitioner, I really like the #PatternLanguage approach.

here is a thread with some exploratory thoughts about #patternlanguage...
I believe the best org structure is a local bespoke design
global abstractions are intoxicating and sense-killing
e.g. see how badly people implement #agile princples and miss the point by miles
