Hal speelt al drums sinds zijn 8 jaar, en in 1943 begint hij jazz te spelen in een paar bigbands in nachtclubs en krijgt les van #RoyKnapp, die ook les geeft aan #GeneKrupa.
Hij komt terecht in de band van #CountBassie.
En volbrengt een tournee met #PattiPage en #TommySands vooraleer hij volledig als sessiedrummer aan de slag gaat, begeesterd door de #rocknroll in de jaren 50.
