When I watch the film #PaulUndPaula nowadays, it's not so much the fairy tale of their relationship that gets to me (I know every move of their dance towards each over), it's the vanished world of the #GDR. Paul skiving off Kampfgruppen manoeuvres. The Kulturpark fairground. The derelict Spree barges on the Rummeslburger Bucht. Saft with his lucrative private enterprise and his Datsche. The old S-Bahn trundling and squealing past. The whole films smells of brown coal and Trabants.
@rbb And of course, in my first book (Stealing The Future), when I had to write a tender scene between our hero Martin and the baddie-in-Chief Evelyn, it had to happen in a cinema showing #PaulUndPaula.
@rbb Not only did the film #PaulUndPaula turn into a classic, it also broke the career of the #Puhdys.
The East German rock band aren't everyone's cup of tea, but there are some classics everyone should have heard at least once, such as Wenn ein Mensch or Alt wie ein Baum.

#OTD 50 years ago in 1972, the cult classic #film (The Legend of) Paul & Paula released in East Germany #DDR.
In a break from socialist realist filmmaking, this was a true love story that refused to model socialist behaviour and allegedly caused the Communist Party guests of honour to walk out of the premiere.
@rbb has an interview with the male lead (Paul) Winfried Glatzeder: https://www.rbb24.de/kultur/beitrag/2023/03/50-jahre-paul-und-paula-interview-winfried-glatzeder.html #PaulundPaula
