There are basically passive adapters since #ExpressCard is just #PCIe 1.1-2.0 + #USB 2.0 or a hot-plug capable, external variant of #MiniPCIe aka. #MiniCard.
And OFC there are adaptors for that...

@lethalbit Considering the speed and cost, that is somewhat expected.
Personally, I wished for a #RAMDISK that is accessible via #SATA, #USB, #SDIO and/or #PCIe:
Like the #iRAM, #CGRAMDISK & #HyperDrive5:

@moreentropy yeah, that could depend on the adaptor manufacturer as #M2 drives also support USB 3.0 and most adaptors don't actually convert #SATA or #PCIe to #USB at all...
@lamp depends...
Some (mobile) Servers & Workstations do #VendorLocking of #PCIe - devices to comply with shitty FCC regulations and deny 3rd party WiFi & WWAN cards to be installed.
#HP even does #VendorLocking in #RAM in their #Laptops, and FUDs people with false alarms every bootcycle that they've to confirm on the physical keyboard, purposefully breaking #WakeOnLAN and rebooting remotely in the process!

@sassageflare well, that's why I I'd use a #PCIe "#Sideplane" [#Backplane] because this way one can freely choose between #amd64 / #ARM64, #SPARCv9, #ppc64 and #riscv64 for their Host System....
But admittedly, modern high-end systems are kinda "boring"...

My point is that entire racks full of interconnected cages full of storage, accelerators, NICs, etc. is quite common in #HPC, and #SGI basically made HPC solutions for CAD & VFX...
Without #SiliconGraphics machines there would be neither #Autodesk nor @blender@video.blender.org / @Blender@mastodon.social / #Blender...
Or at least not at that time...
OFC nowadays #PCIe is far more faster and efficient...
Tho I'm still jealous of "guaranteed rate I/O" on #XFS with select SGI system builds...

@whitekiba @Jain @golem I've yet to see it's connector cuz nowhere was I able to find it...
With PCIe 4.0 that was sadly omnitted from the spec.
And yes there are valid reasons for it:
Like industrial #SBC-based systems which may even utilize passive #PCIe #backplanes that do #Bifurcation per #Chipset, omnitting the need for expensive PCIe #switches.
Kinda like the passive PCIe x16 => 4x NVMe (PCIe x4) cards.
So one would be able to add more stuff onto the backplane...
