Just going live on #kick with #Starcitizen Join for some fun and a frustrating #pcrepair story.
Shoutout to #iFixit for having the tools I needed to open and fix my laptop. The other company I ordered from tried to provide the tools I needed to fix my laptop, but the tools did not fit the screws and some of the tools were broken in half when they arrived. The process was simple and efficient for what I needed.

Blerg. It's looking like I'm going to have to repaste this CPU. #computers #pcrepair
Interestingly, the hardest part of my first hard disc swap in years, the other day, was the fitting of the adapter for the smaller disc sizes into the 1/3rd height bay.
The software part went very smoothly. I partitioned the new discs from blank with gpart(8), added the resultant partitions to the existing zpool with zpool(8) and it has been working smoothly ever since.
It turns out that my first hard disc swap in about 7 years is not actually a cure for insomnia.
The good news was that I hadn't set it up to use ntpd. Checking, it turned out that ntp.conf was configured with NTP servers that no longer exist, anyway.
The bad news was I hadn't actually configured it with anything else. So I had to quickly install Bernstein clockspeed, and after about 5 spaced apart rounds of sntpclock $IPADDRS|sudo clockadd it was back in synch after I had got the time roughly right by hand in SETUP.
I've just done this with a machine that has been off for so long its lithium cell is dead. It complained loudly about losing all settings, and I've already had to re-do SETUP three times.
I have three more machines powered off for similarly long periods.
A 5 pack of replacement CR2032s is now in the shopping cart.
The spudgers have been finally used on the machine that they were bought for. In times past, once one undid the screws, the machine came apart. One didn't have to _also_ pry the plastic apart.
Now I know the sort of fan that it uses. So now I have two fans to buy.
@chloeraccoon Hah! That's been implicit for years. I moved a 3 decade old full-sized tower case the other week, and it still had sharp edges on the holes for the expansion card slots.
"Do not open the case yourself." commanded the label on the base of the second-hand mini-PC whose fan is, rather loudly, on its last legs.
"Why the Hell not?" was my first reaction. Had the Chinese manufacturer booby-trapped it with goblins set to leap out and bite me? As long as I sick to S.I.D.E. I will be fine.
Spoiler: I was fine.
Last night, at last, the HP machine whose memory fan had been squeaking and sticking for about half a decade got a replacement fan.
I woke up in the morning and found that (a) I had left it on overnight, and (b) I hadn't noticed.
Almost silent. Bliss.
Now I have to get a memory fan for the currently powered-off machine that I cannibalized. (-:
My new tweezers worked a treat for getting at the power connector, too.

I really don’t care for windows 11. I have someone’s computer that I reset but for a I5 with 12gb ram it’s running terribly slow. But of course the machine is so locked down and I don’t want to undo it just to boot from a usb to look at the system. I think I’ll just leave it as is. The customer already told me it was running terribly slow before. I’m sure something is wrong. #techsuppot #pcrepair #Windows11

as someone who really loves working with technology, has built PCs with friends and done #pcrepair for a living, moving around a lot for #college really has really made it hard to justify building myself my own #PC
thanks to the YouTube algorithm, cs ghost won me over and I am now in the process of planning for a #pcbuild I’ll do sometime this holiday! :)
…as long as things gpus stay close to msrp. please be close to msrp.

My PC woes did not end... though the replacement of my motherboard was a bit step forward, problems arose again. After it progressed to a point of not even being able to load into windows, I did a clean reinstall back to Win 10 (instead of 11). Despite being on old graphics drivers, it's working beautifully rn.
Pain to reinstall everything, but SUCH an improvement over the constant crashes over the past week or so.
Finally, I can dream of getting back to regular #gaming and less #PCrepair
😭 Finally. The whole fam is back together! Lol
Finally managed to get a replacement keyboard for my older Sony VAIO laptop. I had spilt water on it many many years ago, and despite a successful return-to-function, many keys stopped working. No longer!
I LOVE this laptop as a "old-school" workhorse, given it has FireWire, eSATA, and Memory Stick Duo ports. Stable, fast enough, and 8GB of RAM+SSD!

I took it apart and tried cleaning everything up really well, and still no nice. It acts like there's no RAM in the system at all when I put a module in the (what I've now deemed) bad RAM slot.
Interesting note, 2 different manufacturers for the RAM connectors (Foxconn and Lotes).
Anyway, guess I need to buy a new laptop to put this other RAM module in. :shrug_akko:
