These new addressable RGB strips have been sat on my desk for a while. Finally got around to putting them in the PC. (Also, the strips that were in there were starting to fail, frustratingly...they might be repairable, though, and they can go in another rig.)

Decided it was time to get a and we're still in an age where the only realistic way to buy a GPU for a reasonable price is in a box that also contains the entire rest of a computer, so for the first time since my first self-built PC in the 90s, I started looking for a systems integrator to build me a new box. My main criterion was an AMD build for CPU and GPU. Nearly every integrator was only offering Nvidia GPUs, so I ended up going with .

What a goddamn comedy of errors. All seemed to be going well at first- I was asked if there was anything special they could do in the build and as I had plans to add more storage asked them to please prestage a SATA power and data cable to a 2.5" drive mounting point. "OK", I was told.

Fast-forward to yesterday, the PC arrives. Yay. Yay?

Not so yay.

As I'm removing it from the shipping box (which was gashed; thanks UPS), I hear a loose screw bouncing around inside the chassis. So I crack it open to remove the shipping foam and hunt down the errant screw, and find the following:

  • Many loose connectors, including but not limited to the AIO pump
  • The SATA connectors were not prestaged
  • I paid a $20 line-item for "professional cable management" which apparently was code for "instead of a loose rats' nest of cables crammed into the drive cage, we will give you a very tightly zip-tied bundle of cables that are not routed though the conduit built into the case but just strapped to the motherboard tray and a rats' nest in the drive cage. This was mooted by the fact that I had to cut out all the ties to be able to reach the loose connectors that needed to be properly seated.

A couple hours later, woo, time to fire it up. No POST, or so I thought. Turns out it was only putting out video signal from the motherboard and not the GPU. Fine. But no BIOS setting I configured would give me a video signal from the GPU.

Okay, I'll deal with that after I get the OS set up. So I let it boot to the M2, and start the Windows OOBE, and... bluescreen.

Reboot. Blue screen.

Hm.

Reboot again, blue screen again. Check the BIOS- nothing super-hot, all temps look nominal; no overclocking is set up. As I'm staring at it, it spontaneously reboots again.

So I spend a couple hours pulling the PSU from my current, working, computer, and swap it into the new one in case it's a power issue, but no joy. Booting Linux from USB also throws a kernel panic within 90 seconds.

So I throw the original PSU back in, and just in case the seeming brick of a GPU is the problem, pull it out. No change.

If this is the state of buying a supposedly ready-to-use gaming PC these days, no wonder consoles and Steam Decks are so popular.

At least they replied to my support email in which I requested they either replace the machine or refund my order. Looks like I get to try another builder, presuming the refund actually comes through in a reasonable time.

Can anyone recommend another integrator I could look as I really would rather not spend the time building it myself this time around due to the "Getting A GPU While Not Being An OEM" tax that is still being levied.

: The Choice Is Made! 😜

new CPU is gonna be AMD Ryzen 7 5800x, and since it comes with no cooler, I got a Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO V2.. Everything fine so far 😅

Next steps: new OS (Win11) and new GPU (Suggestions? I'll keep my old screen so fhd is fine. I'm thinking RTX 3060 or RX 6600).

Installed the other RTX 2060 graphics card (a KFA 12GB). All works fine. Too early to tell how much of an improvement the extra cores and VRAM will make to my stream, but I accidentally beamed the USB expansion cards into orbit...

I thought my was going to get an upgrade tonight, but the delivery never showed up. I need dual-channel RAM to enable the integrated Intel Xe graphics. I know Xe isn't much, but it's supposed to give something like 4x better performance over UHD, which is all I can get with one RAM stick installed. So when the order arrives, I'll have 32+16GB RAM installed. Think that's enough?

Just joined the gang. 1440 is a pretty noticeable change from 1080 too. Poor 6 year old RX480 isn't having a good time though.

Well… I went a bit overboard and got caught up in the sales today. My new gaming rig is going to be a wonder to behold! Ryzen 9 7950X with 64 GB DDR5-6000 and an RTX 3090 Ti 24 GB GPU
Estimated GPU speed improvement: 700%

I'm most likely buying a new 1440p monitor for . I think I want to try a curved monitor and 21:9 sounds interesting.

I do normal stuff on my and play , are there problems that people have? Is the experience worth the extra money over a 16:9 flat screen?

Today's arrivals: two 7-port USB PCIe expansion cards. One is going in the main PC (I have a spare PCIe x1 slot accessible on the new motherboard), and one is going back with the 'old' motherboard in the old case to replace the one I pilfered from it when I upgraded the main PC 😛

Here’s an idea, how about an ! “I just upgraded my PC, .” Boost this post and I’ll try to reply to as many questions as I can. Background: I’ve been in IT for 25+ years and a even longer. I’ve built several computers over the years and just finished my latest one. See top of this for the whole saga.

After just a few minor tweaks in the BIOS the 1.2 score is 14136, with a GPU score of 14599 and CPU score of 11985. This is with a minor GPU of +150 core and +750 memory. Next step is to watch some videos on DDR4 overclocking and Ryzen tuning and see how high I can get that CPU score.

For those waiting for the thrilling conclusion of my PC Upgrade saga, here we go. I finally received the final cable, a replacement power cable from the PSU PCIe to the 12 pin on the founders edition. This let me finish cleaning up the rear panel cables (the ones nobody sees). They certainly look better than it started.

Initial run of 1.2 got a respectable 14124. My highest pre-upgrade score was 13121. Adding a thousand points just upgrading the CPU and Memory shows that the upgrade was needed and will easily be worth it. That's it for tonight.

Fortunately the Fan header has just come unplugged when I was installing the GPU riser. Everything is spinning and running quiet. I hadn’t thought about how much quieter new fans would be. Did some basic cable management in the back and got the case sides on. Now I’m going to run some initial benchmarks but it’s late enough that the tweaking and overclocking will have to wait for after work tomorrow.
