Here’s the least laborious way I’ve come up with to manage the fruit from a few Bartlett-type #pear trees. I’m in the Pacific Northwest #PNW

First, cull ruthlessly as they grow. Tiny bit of frass? Misshapen or damaged? Too many for the branch to support? Gone.

When it’s time to pick (still green but fruit snaps off easily) lay them out flat, one layer, not touching. The bugs KNOW. They’ll move into another pear that’s in contact with the one they’re in. Chill or not as you prefer.

This afternoon was spent mowing under pear trees that do t belong to us, but we have permission to harvest from. The first mowing, so it was a bit of work. Sometimes it’s part of the deal we make to get access to #pear #trees, that we maintain them, but it’s also about time to do this, as harvest is approaching, and short grass makes life a lot easier when picking pears up from the ground. #orchards #perry #cider

The only #pear tree in the area that has protection as a natural monument, this tree has stood here probably for at least 180 years. Until recently it was surrounded by tall cherry, and other trees, I was never able to see it’s true form. Sadly no pears this year, and it’s looking a little worse for wear. But a wonderful tree all the same.

As a #cider and #perry maker, one is always keeping an eye on the trees, whether the blossom was good, what the weather conditions are like for pollinators, and then how the fruit is developing through the summer. This year wasn’t great for pollinators during #pear blossom time, so the harvest is looking a bit patchy.

A lovely roadside #perry #pear tree about a kilometre out of the village. Embedded in a large hedgerow it has been badly cut by the local council, but I still love the shape. Most likely Welsche Bratbirne.

Speaking of the pear tree, it’s that really early #perry #pear tree I’ve been wanting to use. Some early falls from the winds of the past week, but unripe, they should be bright yellow. May come back to mow later. But if they fall early Sept, I probably won’t have time.
