#ClimateChange:
"First, the #fires in #boreal regions become more intense, and, because of the tremendous heat being generated, #peat, which has stored carbon for thousands of years, can start to burn and contribute massive amounts of carbon to the air.
That carbon will take at least another 1,000 years to go back into the peat.
Second, in boreal regions, fires can thaw #permafrost, beginning a cascade of microbial processes that may also generate #GreenhouseGases"

On the two-way feedback #wildfires vs #ClimateChange:
"For Loretta Mickley [...] the fires present a dual problem:
Not only are they a symptom of climate change — becoming bigger, hotter, and more common in regions where they can affect large population centers — but they also make the crisis worse. By burning vast layers of partially decomposed vegetable matter called #peat, fires like those in #Canada release even more #GreenhouseGases into the #atmosphere"

Deep Time: Paleobotany and plant evolution
August 26, 2023

This course will serve as an introduction to the evolution of #plants and terrestrial #ecosystems. We will follow the evolution of major plant groups from the invasion of land to the end of the Paleozoic (252 million years ago). One ecosystem we are going to focus on is the iconic Carboniferous #peat swamps. These communities covered vast areas of what is now the US and represent the last forest biome dominated by spore plants instead of seed plants. You will get acquainted with the groups that inhabited these wetlands and the unusual conditions that facilitated their prominence, and you will learn how we reconstruct these inhabitants and their communities in incredible detail. In addition, we will interpret how major environmental changes unfolded across landscapes in the past and how plants have shaped the outside of our planet.

Interesting from Farmers Weekly on fenland peat soils, and changing farming practice to reduce emissions, mainly carbon dioxide as peat dries and methane from ditches and wetland. A difficult balance.

One to watch with interest: bulrush seed heads for insulated clothing (and probably other insulation products too?) providing a plant-based alternative to goosedown or oil-derived synthetics. Plus, it can be a product from re-wetted peatland, increasing biodiversity and carbon capture.

I was potting up some plants yesterday and it got me thinking about peat. Peat or Sphagnum moss is pretty much a unique material in the way it forms a natural sponge. It is used widely in agriculture and horticulture. It is harvested from natural bogs, but this releases a lot of carbon and damages the bog ecosystem.
Is there any reason we aren’t farming peat hydroponically rather than extracting it from bogs? It is a great carbon sink and there is a strong demand for peat. #peat #agriculture
I really like #whiskey, but I've been thinking about it's #environmental impact lately. And, damn, #Islay. This story (from a while back) is just about oil too. Laphroaig et al burn a LOT of #peat. https://www.google.com/amp/s/amp.theguardian.com/uk-news/2021/aug/30/sustainable-scotch-hebridean-distillery-aims-for-net-zero-whisky

Rewetting about half of #England’s lowland peat would be enough to deliver a fifth of greenhouse gas emission savings needed from the country’s #farming by 2030, according to research from the Green Alliance thinktank.
Food grown on lowland peat in England has a much higher carbon footprint than imports of soya from Brazil, because wet peat sequesters carbon, but when peat is drained and farmed it emits about 19 times as much carbon as non-peat cropland.

Last year at RHS Hyde Hall, we bumped into a German gardening author ("Wilde Wiesen gestalten" wild meadows, German gardening book of the year award 2022) and dry garden specialist.
He told us, that he washes of peat-based potting mixes before planting as this increases the chance of the transplanted plant's survival drastically.

I think the peat moss products that bug me most in the U.S. are the peat pots. They take a very good impulse - use less plastic in the garden - and use it to sell a carbon-intensive product. If you want to buy a natural, non-plastic pot (I'd argue that a sturdy, long-term reusable plastic one might be the best choice, but I understand), make sure to get one of the coconut fiber ones, not one made from millenia-old moss.
